Default How to Install Short Throw Without removing Driveshaft

After spending a good 3 hours under my car last night I have come to the conclusion that it is not possible to remove the stock shifter, let alone install the aftermarket shifter without dropping the drive shaft.

As I am sure someone here has removed the stock shifter without removing the drive shaft....how? What voodoo do you need to know?

If the drive shaft needs to be dropped then this adventure of mine is going to have to wait until there is a warm weekened, hopefully not spring.

Thanks!

it is possible to remove the stock shifter without disconnecting the shaft. its a tight squeeze, but its possible. you have to completely remove the entire center console out of the car to do the job. that leaves quite a bit of space to get the threaded portion of the shifter from hitting the center console.

also slide off the rubber gasket and U bracket to give yourself some more when removing it, you have to angle the long portion of the shifter downward and its a matter of moving the shifter around and twisting it a bit, and it will free itself.

i see your in fairfax va. I was just there over the weekend, I could have came and helped ya LOL

Well damn, I could have put you to work.

I bought a roll of dynomat to cover the tunnel to keep some of the new noise out from the Steeda shifter, I decided against it telling myself that I should break the project up into 2 parts. Go figure. I think I am going to end up buying a breaker bar to remove the drive shaft to make installing the new one easier. Thanks for the tip.

you can get it out bro, give it a try. trust me, you'll get it. don't go wasting money for a breaker bar for 1 part installation.

I just finished watching the MGW install video. It makes sense now. I should be able to pull it off with relative ease. Also. they use a crap load of dynomating to quiet that sucker down. Quite amusing.

You can leave the center console in the car also. Grab your wife or kids or a buddy and have them help you from inside the car and you can guide it from underneath.

+1. My friend and I installed my Hurst in just over an hour and we did not remove the console or the drive shaft.

We followed these instructions. http://www.fordmuscle.com/archives/2...fter/index.php

i installed a hurst shifter yesterday, yeah it got to the point when putting it in it got stuck, but just have sum1 underneath the car help guide it in. Tho me and my buddy actually turned the shifter upside down and when it made it through the hole we flipped it back up, theres enough room, least for a hurst shifter, good luck

I installed my Hurst from above by myself and my Pro 5.0 from underneath without lowering the d/s.

I installed my MGW by myself after watching the instructions on the DVD. No problems from the top or bottom. (But then I have worked on expensive machinery for a living for about 40 years.)
