my 6 does the same thing when its real cold at start up. my only guess so far is its the power steering pump whining until it warms up. it goes away after 5 minutes or so.

Yep it was 29 degrees. Thanks for the find on that TSB. I stopped by the Ford dealer and asked if there were any TSB's regarding cold start noises and they flat out said no.

Appreciate the info!

so are you going to go back to that dealer with the TSB in hand? I would do it just to see the look on their face and then make them explain the problem.

does it usually get that cold in AZ? I thought it was always 90 deg. and sunny!

Oh yeah, it gets that cold at night here and then some (of course it climbs back up to 60-70 durring the days). Reason is there's no moisture to hold in the heat at night. Desert gets cold after sunset!

BTW, no noise the last two days, but it's been 37 and 41. I've definately got that nylon idler pully and my build date is right in line that TSB too. I'm half confident this is the problem. Just gotta wait till it get colder a bit and see if it comes back.

did you talk to the dealer about changing the pully? he lied about it the first time, I would see if he make things right this time. if not find a new dealer.

Nope, but I'm going in this morning... TSB in-hand.

Oh BTW if anyone else is having the same issue, I found an update to the TSB that resends the date of manufacture stipulation. It is TSB-09-9-7. (Also applies to Expeditions, F-150s, Explorers, etc. basically anything with a mod motor include the 4.0 for you 6-cyl guys)

Fella's get those P.O.S. nylon idler pullies replaced!

I had a similar whistling noise at cold temps, I'm talking -20 to -30 Celsius and found it to be the little cooling blades in the alternator whistling when the air temp and humidity is just right. As it was whistling I sprayed some compressed air at the blades disrupting the normal air flow and the noise went away. When I stopped spraying the air the noise came back. Once the rad warmed a little so warm air started to flow over the front of the engine the noise went away until the next cold start.

That's what I found.
