Yes, I considered that too but would that sound go away? This sounded more like a tone and not so much your typical vacuum 'whistle'. And the sound was not necessarily like metal on metal, but more like something resonating underneath the hood somewhere. Additionally, the car idled steady and drove fine on the way to work. I did notice it took it longer than usual to idle down to normal when I first started it but I wrote that off to it being cold.
In response to Brent05redfire:
No I was standing out side walking headed back indoors when I first heard it (I like to let the car sit idling and warm up to operating temp on cold days). Actually it was hard to determine exactly where the sound was coming from. Might have been the fuel pump because the sound was a bit non-directional, although I'm pretty sure it was coming from the engine bay.
I'm gonna go out to the parking lot here in the next couple hours or so after the engine has had plenty of time to cool, pop the hood, start it up and see if I can locate it better.
In reponse to 2oo5 GT:
The noise did not last long, by the time the car idled down to normal it was gone and I never heard it again. 1-2 mins. tops.
