Question Problems with a new tune from Bama

Hey AMFers.

I just got a new 93 torque tune from Doug over at Bama and I'm having a couple problems that I'm hoping you guys can help me out with.

I mentioned earlier in another post that I'm still not really feeling any kind of a positive difference, with the only changes I'm seeing being negative changes. Rough shifts, no noticeable change in power at any RPM levels, and a harsh lurch after each upshift.
Now I'm getting two different DTC codes that I've cleared and they've popped back up more than once.
P0171 and P0174. Courtesy of the SCT tuner I can see that these are lean codes in bank 1 and bank 2. Any ideas on this? The install went very smoothly, and I didn't have any problems uploading Doug's tunes. These started up later during the same day I did the install, and they have persisted through the weekend.

I plan on emailing Doug early this week to see his thoughts, but I was hoping you guys had something to add too.

Thanks in advance!

Do you have a cold air intake? Did you list any mods that you have on Doug's tune sheet? If you're bone stock, that would account for the lack of power. A simple retune wouldn't add more than 10 hp. Get a JLT or C&L CAI and talk to Doug. He will make it right. With either intake, expect 20-25 at the wheels, a new level of throttle response, and a much more enjoyable car. And I'd get the race tune but that is just me.

Do you have a CAI? If so check for any leaks, and make sure all electrical connections are secure. If that does nothing you need to call Doug.

Yeah I remember your post, and also remember telling you every car is different and reacts different to tuning. That's the problem with cannned tune files, you say your getting a lean code and that's from the MAF Transfer Function being off. The MAF Transfer Function is the most critical part of your tune, it controls your air/fuel ratio and if that's off your whole tune is off. The best thing you can do for your car, is have it custom dyno tuned then you know that the tune was made for your car. That's the only thing that will solve your problem, and the only way your car will benefit it's full potential. So stop wasting your time and money on these canned tune files, Mike. SCT Tuner.

I wouldn't drive it much in that condition. I'd flash back to stock until resolved.

Doug has what I would call pretty aggressive trans shifting, your definition of harsh may be different than his or mine, this is a difficult one to describe in words.

I tend to think what your feeling is normal for his trans tunes, I would probably describe it as a very noticeable bump in the shift. I am not saying there might not be anything wrong, but it could be normal too.

Are you sure you uploaded the right tune. When I first installed mine I loaded the canned tune instead of Doug's tune the first time and got a lean code. Then I realized what I did wrong.

Hey guys,

Sorry, should have noted that I did get a JLT CAI as part of the tune. When I sent Doug the perimeters of my car he got the axel code and wheel size and engine strategy code, all that good stuff.

Since have it run lean I've swapped back over to the original intake and reset the programming back to stock. Now it runs "great", or at least back to normal.

As far as a dyno tune, I do realize that the best tune I will get will be a result of dyno tuning, but I'm not really jumping at the chance to drop $400 for that. If we're talking about a 10% difference between a canned tune and a dyno tune, I'd be happy saving the $400 and just sticking with the canned tune.

Since I have swapped back to the stock intake/tune I have not had any issues with a CEL code, so I don't think this is a problem with my MAF.

If that changes anything, any ideas are more than appreciated.

Thanks guys.

Quick update. I'm pretty sure I did get the tune uploaded correctly as I did it before the issues, and again after I cleared out the first CEL popped up

And just one more thing on the check list. You did put 93 octane in the car right? If you had too much 87 left or just simply forgot, that would make sense.

Mike is right, I spent hours working with the guys that sold me the tuner to no acceptable end. Codes kept tripping, bad shifting, and a gut feeling the reflashes and canned tunes were not right. I took the car to an SCT vendor and he took care of it.

He wiped the flasher clean of all the worthless tunes (IMO) and set me up with an 93 race, 89 performance and the sweetest of the three, a Valet tune. This "bad boy" has 3000 rpm and a 60 MPH limit to keep the guys at the shops honest.
Nothing has gone wrong since my dyno tunes. Shifts are out of this world, acceleration is fantastic and my "tunless" CAI loves the extra throttle response. Trust me, it was worth the money!!

I've got no doubt that a custom dyno tune is going to yield the best results for my car, but I would like to see if I can get it resolved without dropping an extra $400 on top of what i've already spent.

The only other things I can think of that could have caused this problem are the following, let me know if you guys have any other ideas.

-Dirty or malfunctioning MAF sensor (although would expect to still have -these issues after I swapped back to the stock intake and tune)
-"Somehow" improperly installing the hardware
-Wrong tune uploaded
-Any number of problems with the actual tune

Door number 4 seems like the most likely culprit at this point, although if anything else jumps to mind please feel free to share.

Like I said earlier, I'll follow up with Doug on Monday and hopefully we can make some headway.

Thanks guys,

I've been where you are. Door four sound logical to me as well, with door three being a silent partner. Sounds like you are uploading a tune that does not fit your car.

If your car runs well with the stock hardware, I could not see any MAFs being the culprit. I would not touch them, if possible. They seem to be clean.

I got mine dynotuned for 150 bucks. I promised the shop that I would promote his speed shop anyway I could. I belong to a Mustang Club that is always looking for tips on services and products. We had the whole club come over for a dyno day and he was very happy with the exposure.

I miss the times you could tweak your car to the best air/fuel ratio. Unfortunately, the cars we drive now are smarter, sort of.
We tweak a wrong parameter and the computer tries to compensate tweaking another.

I ordered a JLT CAI and SCT tuner from Bamachips last year. I got 3 tunes from Doug with the order... a 91 Torque, 91 Race, and 91 Performance.

I installed the new CAI and the 91 Torque tune on my stock 2008 GT, and started the car up and went creeping through the neighborhood to the exit gate at about 9:30pm...

I got it out of the neighborhood and mashed the gas pedal.

It was a COMPLETELY different car! I laughed my a$$ off :-) I was and continue to be very happy with the package I got from Doug.

I have since used all 3 tunes and have settled on the 91 Race tune. The intake and tune totally changed my car for the better. Awesome throttle response and really fun automatic shifting.

Since the Bamachips tune and your car aren't getting along, I've heard lots of great things about Tillman's and Brenspeed's tunes, and to make that $25,000-$30,000 Mustang really shine I'd budget $100 or so to try at least one SCT email tune from Tillman and Brenspeed too.

Believe me... When you get a good tune with that JLT CAI, you'll be really happy!

Little update on this one.

I emailed Doug this morning with a lengthly explaination of what is going on. Hopefully he will have some ideas and we can get a fix in place.

I was also contacted by someone on the board that offered to try his hand at my problem. So between the two of them I'm sure I can get this fixed before too long. I'll keep y'all updated.
