Well, If was planning on replacing the Head Unit, the Ford speakers are coming out and would POLK or something else in the place of the Factory. I guess my question was has anyone removed the entire unit and speakers and built a custom sound system. I guess someone out there makes a HEAD unit kit to take up all that space the the 500 or 1000 uses.
same problem with my '05 GT shaker 1000/ mp3. keep me updated on what FORD says.

In my opinion, I should be able to buy any CD from the store and the CD player should be compatible. If it does not play industry standard CD, then the system is defective. I'm going to ask Ford to replace it with something that works. Anyone else have this problem?
I may have stumbled onto a 'non-invasive fix' for studdering and skipping CD's(well, at least it worked for the Shaker 500 system in my '05 Mustang GT).
During a trip yesterday the 1st CD that I played skipped 3 times within 10 minutes. I selected a different CD, it played flawlessly, went back the the 1st CD, and it also played without a hitch as well as all other CD's for the remainder of the trip.
I'll see if that fix works all of the time, and post back.
I went to the meeting (Northern Virginia Mustang Club) this week and talked with the other '05 drivers, it seems this is a common complaint. I got my car in Nov. and I have had only one skip on my Shaker 1000...so either my stereo is a fluke OR...being that I just broke 600 miles on it, I'm not driving it as much as everyone else to notice it.
I hope Ford resolves the issue, this a great stereo...

Here's something that may be contributing to the studdering and 'bad disk' problems.
I removed a CD from the Shaker 500 system, inserted it in my home system's CD player, and the player failed to recognize it. I ejected and reloaded the CD multiple times, and each time the player failed to recognize it. I thought this was strange since the home player never had any previous problems recognizing this specific CD.
So I removed the CD, and noticed that there were multiple lines streaking its playing surface, which I never noticed before.
After cleaning them off, the player had no problem recognizing the CD.
I then checked the other 5 CD's in the Shaker, and all of them had those same marks.
And the home CD player had the same problem recognizing them until I cleaned off the marks.
So is the studdering and 'bad disk' problems are being caused by the marks that the Shaker player is making on the CDs' playing surfaces?
And has anyone else had this same experience?
Ski brings up an interesting revelation. Could the shuffling mechanism in the Shaker units be causing the streaks? I've read the Owner's Manual quite thoroughly on the audio system and it does note in bold letters that the CDs need to be clean. Not to say that any CD you insert is not clean when first inserted, but it seems that the reading eye of the Shaker unit could be very sensitive and thus have problems reading a disc if the slightest of a smudge is present; even if caused by the unit itself.

My Shaker 1000 has skipped twice in 2500 miles. I think it was the cd both times. I sratched one of them brand new, inserting it into the player(front cover). I have it loaded with 6 mp3 dics now and they play just fine. All are burned. Perhaps I got a Wednesday install but mine has worked nearly flawlessly. I'm completely satisfied. Hope it doesn't mess up now that I bragged on it.

I complained about the skipping & bad disk problem today, when I went for an oil change and the service advisor told me that the burned CDs are too thick (?!?). I wondered to him that how else you can have MP3 CDs than burning them..? He just told me to try to find thinner CD-Rs. This sucks. My '01 had never a problem with the CD player. Now I can't burn CDs on my iBook anymore. Ones burned on PC however seem to work better, but not perfectly.

"Too Thick"? What a load of crap. The service manager probably just doesn't want to deal with it. He's skirting the real issue...there are a lot of bad systems out there.
reading all these problems with shaker stero systems makes me wonder. My 96 mustang gt mach 460 skipped and stopped playing cd's. My 99 Eddie bauer explorer had the radio replaced 3 times and now the led lights are out again bummer no clock with lights out. maybe ford needs to rethink radio supplier. Why can't they offer a better sound system with built in XM
I just got my Mustang today, well officially tommorrow. Well I work at a dealership and took my shop foreman for ride (I think I turned his hair a little grayer ) and said Ford knows about the problem and that the supplier has a fix for the concern. So if yours does this (mine didn't, I even played a burned CD) take it in to the dealer. They should call the factory asssistance hotline and get the correct information. I think my Mustang was made last week (1/25) so the fix should be in during production, only time will tell. I plan on driving mine alot this weekend, so we'll see if the problem has been fixed.
Supposedly if you replace the head unit you will lose some of your speakers if you check out Crutchfield.com and do a search for stereo's that fit the 05 mustang it gives you a warning that the head unit does not support speakers( and this is top of the line equipment)
This is only true if you get the shaker system. I would reccommend that if you intend on installing an aftermarket system, just get the standard stereo, and save it. The Mustang would trade higher with the stock system. I just got my parts from Crutchfield for a complete replacement. Still waiting on the car...
