I have had my '05 GT now for a few weeks, I am noticing that in the cold starts first thing in mornings, I have a terrible "tin rattleing" from what appears to be right under the mid chassis area like perhaps the baffle is rattling. This only occurs during cold starts and once car is warmed up in appx 5 minutes, it goes away. I took it to dealer yesterday and they could not find anything from the underside (heat shields loose or what not), so I don't know. My freind has a newer corvette and says it is same thing with him. He says its the baffle plates "settling" but I don't care for the issue. Anybody else have such an issue? If so, is there a fix?
It sounds like the dreaded dust shield bolts on front of the transmission. Your car is probably a 5speed. On almost all 5 speeds there are 2 3/8-16 bolts missing on the dust shield which is right behind the oil pan and mounted on the front of the transmission. Mine were missing I put bolts in the noise is gone.
Hmmm, so you had the noise only during cold starts as well?
Thanks for the tip, I will investigate this.
Mine is a 5 speed as well.
Enjoy your ride, how many miles do they recommend before the car is assumed "broken in " and one can use the higher rev's like 6 grand and what not?
:thumbsup
Mine didn't make any special noise when cold ,but I always felt the transmission was noisy in first gear. I've known about the missing bolts for sometime now. I even purchased them a couple of weeks ago. Well, it was a beautiful sunny day in the low 70's today, so I put my car up on my rack in the back garage and put the bolts in. I can't believe how much quieter it is!!!! no trans noise at all .
My 2001 Mustang was making that rattling noise so I took it to the Ford dealer I bought it at and had them check it out. Come to find out I had somehow gotten rocks in my exhaust shields. They removed the rocks and she was quiet again. The only problem is that more rocks have gotten in there again and I dont know where to look to get the rocks out myself so I dont have to pay $40.00 for the Ford dealer to do it. Can anyone help me out???
Are you driving in gravel alot? I never heard of this issue.
If you can get your car lifted high enuff you will clearly see the exhaust sheilds (curved perforated plates) which are intermittantly installed along your exhaust run at areas where the exhaust come close to the chassis. You should be able to remove the rocks then.
