Default magnaflow exhaust

Considering buying a magnaflow exhaust system, for my new 05 GT baby, however, I noticed that there web site lists two sets for the 05 Mustang GT; the regular magnaflows, and then the magnaflow magnapaks. What's the difference betweens the regular cat back system, and the magnapaks?

Also, I have reviewed the exhaust threads, but I am looking for the best exhaust for the performance gains, and the sound it provides. Magnaflow seems to be the best, in terms of performance, but the sound is fairly close to stock. I am looking for something that provides a loud, throaty roar in the exhuast, but with optimal performance, not just sound. What do you think?

I have the axle-back Magnaflow and am happy with the sound/looks. The sound change is not major but it has a deeper resonance sound. The Magnapaks are louder than the Magnaflows.

As for performance, I would not expect much if any. Short of new headers, x-pipe, exhaust & a tune, will you see much difference. Frankly, spending $1000+ for single-digit hp gains is not very cost effective for me.

I've also got the Magnaflow axle-back kit. It's quiet, almost like stock, with just a little bit better tone. If you want loud pipes, get something else.

I'm thinking of going to an off-road x pipe.

I personally think I am gonna go with the Magnapacks (part #15883)...

Default Magnaflows Claims

These are posts by a manager of Magnaflow..he posts on another board as I do and these are cut/pasted from his posts.
---------------------------------------------------------------------

The X pipe takes advantage of the exhaust pulses that the engine creates as the different cyclinders fire-

As one side of the motor fires, an exhaust pulse goes through the exhaust system, and as it goes through the X, it creates a vacuum in the pipe coming from the other side, which will in turn help to pull the exhaust out of the cumbustion chamber when the exhaust valve opens-

On a stock Mustang, this netted us approx 5-6rwhp on average and around 3rwtq over the traditional H pipe design-

Also, as a result of the exhaust paths crossing each other directly, it also modifies the length of the soundwaves which in turns quiets the exhaust system-

The main problem with the H pipe, is that once a certain RPM is reached, the exhaust velocity increases to such that it is bypassing the balance tube-

The secret with the success of the X though is maintaining the highest exhaust velocity possible, as the faster the air moves, the more efficient the X is (if designed properly) so a straight through muffler will create bigger gains for the X then a chambered muffler will-

On the other hand, as a chambered muffler will reduce exhaust velocity, it will slow the exhaust down enough so that the H will become useful at a higher RPM then it would with a straight through muffler-

Overall, the main goal of an exhaust system is to remove exhaust gases at the highest possible rate, so mainatining the highest velocity possible is key in a good exhaust system-

http://www.magnaflow.com/05news/magazine/05racepgs.asp

Here is a magazine article where they tested an H pipe and an X pipe and the X pipe gained 7.4rwhp and 8rwtq over an H.

We used to make H pipes for Mustangs, that was selling well, but we felt the X provided enough benifits to make the switch.

Default More on Magnaflow by Brent

The Magnaflow and Magnapacks difference is the sound. The Magnapacks will offer a much more aggresive tone-

Basically it will be louder then the Magnaflows so you will hear it a little more inside the car-
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Is Magnaflow a glass pack design?

No

Here are the differences between a glass pack and a Magnaflow

Magnaflow- preforated inner tube
Glass Pack- louvered inner tube

Glass pack- filled with fiberglass which will eventually blow out, burn up, retain water exc....

Magnaflow- Italian Rock Wool- basically composed of lava rock, and has a melting point of about 2500 degrees. It expands and hardens over the first 2 weeks of use...so it does get louder over the initial two weeks because as it hardens, it is unable to absorb sound as when it is soft.

Basically you will melt the stainless before you melt the packing.

So you get the advantage of a straight through design, with the durability of a muffler with no packing.

There are other differences as well stainless vs non stainless, construction and so on, but I will not get into that much detail here....

Wow, things happened fast today. I called www.LightningForcePerformance.com and got a Bassani 5-piece off-road/comp cats kit, installed it after work.

It sounds awesome, and I can swap the comp cats in anytime I need to, 8 bolts.

Call Mark at LFP for your 05 Mustang parts - he's got all kinds of stuff for us, it's just not out on their website yet.

Sounds sick!! :thumbsup

Does anyone have or know where I can get sound clips of the Magnapacks? The Magnaflow website has the same clip for both mufflers. I've heard lots of clips of the Magnaflows, but none of the Magnapacks. This will be the deciding factor for whether or not I get them, the JBA's, or the MAC Performance. I want loud, but not Loudmouth loud, and I can't go any higher than Magnapacks pricewise. Help??

ok boys and girls, it's video time ... although, I don't think it really does justice to this setup ...

Video (low q), 2.1 MB, sound quality at 32 kHz

Video (high q), 4.2 MB, sound quality at 44.1 kHz

Bassani off-road x-pipe and Magnaflow axle-back
