05-8-8 GROWL/GRINDING NOISE IN 2ND OR 3RD GEAR DURING DECELERATION - TR3650 MANUAL TRANSMISSION - VEHICLES BUILT BEFORE 1/15/2005

ISSUE:
Some 2005 Mustang vehicles equipped with 4.6L engine and the TR3650 manual transmission built before 1/15/2005, may exhibit an intermittent raspy grinding noise while driving in 2nd and/or 3rd gear during deceleration. The noise may sound like a bearing growl, screech or scraping noise. Noise intensity may be light to medium, and is more likely to occur during the first few minutes of warm-up.

ACTION:
Order a synchronizer kit and a snap ring kit. Replace the reverse gear and synchronizer on the main shaft, and the associated snap rings. Refer to Workshop Manual Section 308-03B.

NOTE: DURING DISASSEMBLY, IF METAL SHAVINGS ARE FOUND ON THE TRANSMISSION MAGNET WHEN REMOVING THE EXTENSION HOUSING DO NOT CONTINUE WITH THIS TSB. THE TRANSMISSION MUST BE REPLACED

WOW.... I think they should just wait about 1yr and rebuild all of our early cars for free.

Glad to see Ford finally recognized the problem. Although I did get my Transmission replaced in Feb for the problem. No issues to date since the replacement. My Dealer and Service Advisor seem to want to work with their customers to fix a problem, not give them the run around. Sounds like my old transmission gave Ford a shop queen to figure out what was happening to others.

This TSB could save people thousands of dollars if their trannys outlast the warranty. I'm kind of surprised it's not a sticky. It can potentially save more money than any other TSB I've seen released.
