Cool First Road Trip - Possible Problem?

Okay - I've had my 05 V6 for about 2 months - and finally was able to take a day off and go for a "road trip" - it was about 400 mile loop around the part of Northern Utah.

Couple of things I'm going to mention.

1) this car loves doing 70 to 80 - without paying attention I'll look down to see I'm doing between those speeds it's incredible how smooth the ride is. As I only saw 2 other cars on the roads I was on all day it was a very peacful drive.

2) The gas milage for total freeway driving blew me away - 27.8 mpg average, when I'm driving around town the last 2 months I've been about 17 to 18 mpg.. Once again very impressed.

-- Possible Problem...

At the end of the trip and I was getting off the freeway to head home I was at the red light, when it turned green.. I got a weird jerk almost like the tranny didn't know what gear it shoudl be in an then ended up in 1st and kinda a sudden acceseloration - I could not duplicate the problem the rest of the drive home - nor have I been able to do it sense - my thoughts were the tranny was just confused - almost like the 8 hours of driving at a consent speed had confused it or something. There were not funny sounds or noises..

Also what I noticed from the freeway back to my house that the car just wasn't as responsive.. It still moved mind you but it just didn't feel like the same car I've been driving for the last 2 months - now the day after the trip driving it around to do some arrands and get the bugs washed off it was the good old car I've been driving.

I did check all the fluids - I was good - it also appears this car has a tranny cooler on it - so I find it hard to believe that the tranny overheated or anything..

Question - anyone else witness this type of behavior?

I am thinking about getting the SCT computer tuning as well -- I'm wonderin if I should hold off on that now - or whether i should just go ahead and do it again saving the factory defaults just in case..

Any information would be great.

I have the V8 but did notice a hesitation of sort after my first stop on a long trip. These cars do run different at times. I think the under hood temp plays a big role. I think the sluggish feeling is it retarding the timing. These things will drop some HP when warm. Bad heatsoak. Dyno's run back to back will show some big losses if not cooled with a large fan. I think you are ok with your car.

It,s the computer learning a different driving pattern, I.E. highway back to city.

I had this same problem and there is a TSB free fix from Ford for it. The problem is the fuel pump...during long driving periods, air bubbles some how get introduced into the fuel line causing the exact symptoms you describe. Do a search in the V6 threads on the word "Hesitation". I just had this fixed several weeks ago, and now the car finally drives the way I had always expected...sympoms are gone. I strongly suspect that this is your problem...as I read your description, I felt as though you had drove my car on that trip! Do have the TSB service done on your car and please report back!

The top two posters need to look at TSB 06-9-9 which addresses the long cruise/fuel pump issue.
