Default 2005 Ford mustang problems...

Hey there, last month I purchased a new mustang. All the research I did led me to beleive that all the problems had been resolved. But ever since I bought my car I have had problems filling it up with gas. I don't necessarily have problems inserting the nozzle in the car, but have problems filling up the tank. The automatic stopper on the nozzle keeps stopping when I'm refueling, usually the indicator that the gas tank is full. But in this situation, my gas tank isn't full, I barely have put one gallon in. Is anyone else having this problem.

Known problem... have your dealer replace your gas tank:

FUEL FILL SLOW, OR DIFFICULT TO FILL TSB 05-4-8
ISSUE:
Some 2005 Mustang vehicles may exhibit the fuel tank being slow or difficult to fill. The condition may be described as, repeated rapid shutoffs of the filling station pump nozzle, or multiple nozzle shutoffs when attempting to fill the fuel tank. The condition may be due to the fuel tank vapor venting system inside the fuel tank.

ACTION:
Install a new fuel tank. The new fuel tank has a revised internal venting system to improve fuel filling. Remove the fuel tank assembly per Section 310-01 of the Workshop Manual.

Hey, thanks I appreciate the info. Now I have something to show the dealer when I go in there next week. Much appreciated. I've talked with other mustang owners who aren't having the same problem. I thought it was just me for a while. It's sure nice to know that it's not. Have a great one!

Default Gas Tank Issue

Until you are able to get the tank fixed - you can flip the gas nozzle upside down - and it works perfect to fill the tank. I have now had the tank replaced 3x and it has not fixed the problem. SO hopefully it will work on yours!! BUT I FEEL YOUR FRUSTRATION!!

I would try this before I would turn the nozzle upside down. Nozzles don't like to shutoff when upside down. I had that happen to me. Not in my car, my truck

This thread is really funny for me because the same thing haappened to me tonight at an Exxon station and the guy working there said he hates to fill up new Mustangs because alot of them do this. Well my car is under an extended warranty so when I go back to get the oil changed in February I will have them replace the fuel tank. A little off point with the following: anyone here in South Jersey? If so what dealers are willing to work with you with aftermarket parts? I bought my car from Gentilini Ford but could also use Chapman Ford. This is one reason why I have not modified my car yet. I have a extended dealer warranty up to 75,000 miles or 3 years and dont want to mess with it until the urge to modify overwhelms me.

My car does the same thing but mine is an 07. Did they not correct this after the first 2 years of problems?

I own a 2007 Mustang V-6. I purchased the car in December of 2006. I have about 17000 miles on it. I have the same problem filling the gas tank. I have noticed that the problem exists when I have been running the car for a bit and it is hot. The problem does not occur if I go to get gas at the start of a trip before the car has been running for long. Also, I do occasional track days and this problem seems to be much worse when I go to fill the tank after several sessions where I am running the car hard.

Do others have similar experiences?

After looking at the gas tank and exhaust placement, I suspect that heat from the exhaust system is causing some pressure build-up in the gas tank and it is not venting properly. I am thinking that maybe a heat wrap or heat shield on the exhaust pipe near the tank might partially or fully resolve this problem. I note that someone on this thread (in a link) mentioned that cleaning a filter connected to a valve on the fuel tank vent resolved the problem. I suspect that issue is a symptom of the overheating. I am wondering if anyone has tried reducing heat to the tank by wrapping the exhaust and what their results were.

My wife and I have a 2007 V6 convertable--it does the same thing. I have complained and taken it back to the dealer at least three times just in case I ever need to invoke the lemon law. The upsidedown nozzle on a slow notch is the best workaround; just let it barely hang in the filler hole. If you find a pump at any gas station that works better than others, remember it and go back. We always check the quantity of gas used before filling (reset it then for your next fill) so we know how much to put in even if it means pulling the trigger over and over. Be prepared to wipe gas off the side of your car. If anyone says anything about spilling gas, refer them to the Ford Motor company--its their baby.
