Unhappy Strange Clunking Sounds

I've had my car since January, and I have almost 7,000 miles, and overall, it seems to be a pretty solid car. However, recently, in the past 500 miles, I've been hearing some very strange clunking sounds coming from the suspension. When I brake and accelerate again, there's a loud metallic clunk coming from the rear end. Also, when I go over bumps, I get the same strange sound. Also, I'm getting similar sounds from the front of the car when I'm turning the wheel quickley. Has anyone else had these problems? Should I take it to the dealer?

By the way, it's a V6 with the automatic.

Thanks!

I also have a V-6 auto, & I've heard the same noise at times, especially when turning the wheel when you are backing out. Sounds like the suspension, but I'm not sure. I'm due for my first oil change; I'm going to let the dealer do it this time and have them check it out.

Thanks; it's an original design by one of my neice's friends who let me borrow it. It's very pretty in "grown up" size....

Well, it's good to see I'm not the only one with this problem! I think I'll wait another thousand miles, get it to the point where I can reproduce the sound consistently, then bring it in. I doubt seriously something's going to actually break under there, but when I pay $23,000 on a car, I expect better than that!

Thanks!

if the rattle is consistant,it souldn't be that hard to locate.just take it to your dealer, thats what warrenty is for.there are some tsb, service messeges for suspension noises.

Default Front clunking is a known issue

My O5 GT has clunking from the front end. I'm told it's a known issue, and the dealer ordered parts that will be installed next week when I drop it off. Based on the number of posts related to this topic in the "defects" forum, above, it sounds like lots of folks have experienced this.

Default Clunk clunk

I too have the clunking in the front end. I think it has something to do with the spring seats. I spoke to a guy at Steeda.ca (Pat) and he says this is an issue with all the '05 GT's. Does the dealer have a fix? When I call the dealer I bought my car from they act as if they've never heard anything about it!

I believe they do have a fix. My dealer had to order parts, which have come in, and I'm bringing my car in this week for installation while I'm travelling. I'll post back next week when I get the car back and let you know if it got any better.

Default Clunking noise

I took mine into the dealership for the clunking noise under the car; they ordered parts (bushings, etc) and will fix it next week. The service guy told me there was a tsb report on this problem, so if yours is doing the same I'd take it in. Also, I've been having a hard time closing my gas cap, and the little "gascap open" light is lit on my dash. Upon inspection, I noticed that the opening to the tank moves around now, when it didn't do that before. The dealership checked this out as well, and will replace the gas tank housing next week. Here's to working out all the bugs!!! (....and thank god for the warranty)

Is this still the same problem they put out a TSB for back in April? (See below.) I heard they fixed this at the factory for the later models, but I got mine 06/22 and it has a klunk too. It's mainly in 1st & 2nd gears if I accelerate/deaccelerate. Can't tell if it's suspension or drive train. I'm just waiting to see what everyone else is experiencing on this b4 i take it in to dealer.

TSB
05-9-11 FRONT SUSPENSION POPPING NOISE WHILE TURNING RIGHT OR LEFT - VEHICLES BUILT BEFORE 4/8/2005

Publication Date: April 27, 2005

FORD: 2005 Mustang

On both sides of the vehicle, install a revised upper strut bearing assembly. If the vehicle was built before February, 2005 it may also be necessary to install a lower spring seat isolator if one is not already present. Refer to the following Service Procedure

Thanks for the info kltaylor. Hopefully this will be what I need to get the dealer to do something with the popping in my suspension. Also, have the clunking between 1st and 2nd (V6 manual)

I bought my GT on November 1. After a few thousand miles (it now has 9K) a clunk developed in what I thought was the steering gear. I was concerned because I worked at the Ford plant that makes the steering gear and none of our quality reps knew of the issue. I took it in for service in March - the service rep told me Ford was aware of the problem but had not developed a fix yet. Since then the popping or clunk noise seems to have spread to the rear of the car as well as the front. Thanks to the information from this site I now know there is a fix available. I am soon due for an oil change and will have the dealer check it out, as well as the problem I had with the gas cap coming loose and the dash warning light coming on. It only did that once but the light stayed on for several days.
