Default Looking for places to let pony stretch it's legs in Southern Cali.

I was just wondering where would be a good drive around Southern California for my new '05 GT. I have driven it a few times down to Laguna Beach on PCH and enjoy the turns, the views and seeing all the deep pocket folks in their Ferraris and Lambos trying to out do each other. So if there are any other California stang owners who know of a good stretch of road to run my baby on please fill me in.

sounds like you and I are crusing the same roads, and yeah, it's getting tough to find an open piece of road - even the old stand-bys out in the San Bernardino area are just too damn clogged for any real fun. I pretty much do the PCH run every Sat AM - meet some cool people and see a lot of exotic cars, and then stop for some coffee and chat - suprisingly a lot of those ferrari owners like the mustangs.

If you're hitting that area of PCH, have you tried Newport coast road - not very long but a nice, 60 mph road with some smooth curves and a great view of the ocean - just watch for cops and bicyclists when you run into PCH at the bottom. It's a nice sweeping curve with a perfect opportunity to really smoke 'em up!

Even the drive to Vegas sucks now unless you can do it on a weekday - mid day so there are not too many trucks - on the way out there are some good roads that lead off into oblivion (Death Valley), just remember how to get back to the highway.

I'm still looking too my friend - the toll roads (241 & 261) can be good but watch out for cops big time - but when it's clear, it's good running. Of course you pay for it. 73 isn't too good, and the 5 is always crap now. I used to love the drive to SD, but it's an ordeal now.

Santiago Canyon is a GREAT drive as long as you are not stuck behind a crop duster.

Good luck!

Try Ortega Canyon Hwy. Goes from Lake Elsinore to San Juan Capastrano. Another one is Glendora Mountain Raod. Goes from Mt Baldy to Glendora. Haven't driven either in awhile, but both will get your blood pumping.

I second PCH. It gets real gorgeous, especially before it hits Laguna... there's the one large hill, then you're at Laguna Beach. I'm one of those cyclists on the road, so I truly apprecaite every inch of PCH. Or, how about the toll road near UCI's campus. Lots of nice views. I think it's $3 to $5 dollars, but worth the drive, and hardly any cars, and some twisties.
