Default Head rest poking into you?

So, its been two months, and after a quick grocery run yesterday, I just couldn't take the head rest poking me in my head anymore. No matter how I put the seat, or the head rest, it hits me wrong. I have to recline the seat back to almost a ghetto/ganster reclined position to get it from touching me. Then I start driving all hunched over like I belong in a bell tower somewhere. Not attractive.

So yesterday I pulled out the drivers side one and bent it a bit in the vise. The angle of it seems slightly better.

I'm only 5'6", you'd think the headrests wouldn't be a problem. But for any female drivers out there, forget trying to drive with a pony tail or any sort of clip in your hair. Ouch.

I haven't found any aftermarket solutions that didn't involve a new seat, and I love the seats. I just loath the headrests. I don't want to run around without the head rest on either, because if that air bag goes off, I don't want to break my neck.

Anyone have any thoughts/solutions/ideas?

~Amanda

Amanda,

Sorry I don't have a solution for you, but I couldn't resist picking up the pun in your post (highlighted above)...

I actually like the headrests because I feel my beck/neck/head are more fully supported, but I'm taller than you are (5'10").

I am 5'4 and I have found that if I raise the head rest I can rest my head and my pony tail/ hair clip fit between the seat back and head rest. Much more comfortable.

You are a quick one... I love that! Accidental puns are the best.

Well, it was actually tough to do the first time- the metal rods go all the way up into it, and the foam is molded around them. Where there are cut for the notches for the adjustable "clicks" if you will is rather thin, and I didn't want to REALLY beat it to death. also didn't want to damage the leather or have the metal come poking out. So when I got it about an inch and a half moved I stopped. I also just couldn't move it anymore.

I couldn't agree with you more. The headrest is the ONLY thing I don't like about my 05. I have about a 50 minute commute to work. And although I don't usually use the headrest, at the end of a long day it would be nice to lay my head back in a comfortable position when I want to. I love the way the seats look, I just wish they were a little more "user-friendly."

Also, my wife had a banana clip in her hair the other day when she got in the car. She had to take it out. It annoyed her, but was cool with me. I like her hair down anyway!

Hmmm...I am also 5' 6" and think this is the best headrest of any car I have had - it actually is in the correct position for a change and I do not need to lean back to find it. Then again, I sit rather upright when I drive (no pun intended and just don't go there! ), and it fits me just perfect. It does not get in my way at all.

Although I do not have a pony tail - well, not for a few years anyhow.

I agree with you on this. I too am 5"6" and it just seems be ideally placed. If you think about it the closer the head rest is to your head the more effective it will be as it its purpose is to stop the head from whipping back.

yep - I'd like to keep my neck in once piece - and hopefully, none of us will ever have to test that.

I know the headrests meet an upcoming safety requirement which I think will be mandatory on all new 07 or 08 vehicles so in a few years every new car will have it. The angle is supposed to significantly reduce whiplash injuries. It's better to have a messed up hair style than a gorked neck

I wasn't being girly about that.... its really uncomfortable for me to drive with my neck and head pointing down and hunched up like the hunchback of notre dame. More than 20 minutes in the car makes me need a chiropractor- which is a shame, because the car is made to be driven, not looked at in my driveway.

I did swing by my dealer today and found out that other people had been asking the question as well. What we're thinking is to order a headrest for another vehicle that has the tilt option- since all the ford ones are pretty much the same size for the metal part.

Well, no matter what the safety issue is, people come in all shapes and sizes, and of course different hair style and habits too - unfortuantely, one size may fit most, but not all. Hopefully you'll get it worked out because you can't be driving around with bad posture or in an uncomfortable position - I do a lot of work in physical training and a lot of people have no idea just how much their sitting habits are destroying their posture. It's important that the chair fits!!
Good luck with that.
