Default Turbo mounted back by the diff?..Oh ya !

I recall hearing about a shop in California that was making turbos for 4th gen Camaros that was mounted all the way out back by the diff. As bizzare as this sounds it made alot of sense and incredible gains, 60% on an LS1 which means those camaros were making 475-500hp . No parasitic drag like a blower, no need for an intercooler as the intake was mounted just infront of the rear bumber where lots of cold air is, no need for an oil cooler as the oil line ran from to back...and then back to front to cool the oil, and if you plumbed it right things looked basically stock under the hood . Of course the exhaust to spin it was plumbed out back and then a return tube plumbed back to front with all that wonderful boost. The only down side was it was'nt good in the rain because the air intake was down low just behind the left rear tire and would get soaked (careful with the burnouts ). Anyone know anything about these? Or better yet have they been tinkering with one for our rides?

Yes, I've seen pics of the Rear turbo kit on an 05 Mustang. It does exist, I just can't fine the links to it. But it has been done. If I remember correctly, I think the kit was in the 450 RWHP range. Don't know about price.

Can I ask a stupid question? Why? What's wrong with a conventional turbo setup?

Tasty above pretty much laid it out for you, much better cooling which is normally the only downfall for the turbos compaird to the super charged cars. You will also get a better weight distribution and with that more weight moved to the rear where you want it on the wheels...

this ultimate racing kit is one, but it still is not the one I saw. The one I saw has the turbos actually where the mufflers are, at the rear of the car. I'll keep looking for the link.

The rear mounted turbo kit is the dumbest thing ever. I saw them last year at the SEMA show on Rams, F-150s, etc... So, you want to mount a turbo WAYYYY in the rear of the car. why? Unless you run the smallest turbo, and the tinest piping, you are going to have MAJOR turbo lag. The car would have to spool up to quite a fair mount of revs to get the exhaust moving. So after it travels 5-7ft of tubing to spool the turbo, the forced air now has tot ravel the same about of distance back up to the front of the vehicle.

yea, maybe you will get good dyno results, but in racing, whats the use??

my thing is, if they arn't using it for Racing, it really doesn't make a difference.

Why doesn't nascar use 2,3,4 tipped spark plugs instead of 1 tip? B/C there isn't an improvment in performance. Why doesn't NHRA, IHRA, or other drag associations use this tubro method? B/C it isn't better than what they have. It is just something to attract the public and hope to scam a few people. JUST LIKE WINGS ON FRONT WHEEL DRIVE CARS!!! my 2¢

My .2

The volume of air in the tubing is the worst part, the more air that needs to be compressed the longer it will take to compress with the same size turbine.

Compressing air means closing the space between the molocules of each air atom. Thus making the air more dense. Now when u have more air in a larger spaces there is more room to compress. There for increasing the amount of time it takes to build up higher levels of boost.

I won't claim to know much about turbo's or spark plugs, but NASCAR has a tendency to curtail technology to make the sport affordable. So does the NHRA. For example, when was the last time you saw a double overhead cam, variable valve timing, or even EFI in either sport? Not likely to happen for a very long time. (though Don Schumacher in NHRA is making rumblings about it) There might be other reasons for the 4 tip plugs, longevity perhaps, don't know.

Plus a turbo wouldn't work so well on the top fuelers 'cuz there is no exhaust collector, each cylinder has it's own exhast tip. And mounting a turbo on those things is likely to melt it before the burnout is finished.

anyways... what I'm getting at is that comparing street cars with NASCAR/NHRA is a bit dicey at best. Sooner or later those two sports will have to catch up with the technology a bit. Might be better to compare with GT Racers where technology is permitted and encouraged.

I have driven a Firebird LS1 with the rear single turbo unit installed and it was perfect. You get the boost when you need it after the car is moving and has traction and with all the horsepower and torque of the LS1 I did not feel any turbo lag. When I get a chance to post, I will post the Dyno sheet and you will see no dip in the graph. This is a excellent street driven setup which has another benefit. No Emission Problems. This setup installs after the CATs so no emission issues at all. I wish we (Mustang Fox) had more room behind the bumper because it is nice and stealth and no engine area heat and a nice transfer of weight.
