Default How to check auto transmission fluid level?

I ran a search but couldn't find where anybody has posted how to check our automatic transmission fluid level. I've look under the car all around the tranny and don't see an over flow plug. Only a drain plug.

I took a look. It appears to be just power steering to me but there is a second line, under the line coming from the reservoir to a cooler, that appears to go toward the rear somewhere. Maybe it goes to the tranny. Would have to get under the car again.

Anybody know for sure?

how about reading the owners manual. it describes what you need.

TRANSMISSION FLUID
Checking automatic transmission fluid
The 5R55S transmission does not have a transmission fluid dipstick.

as for power steering: it's on the driver side right in front of the air filter

How about you reading it again! It does not tell you where to check it only to have your authorized dealer check it. I'm not going to the dealer just to check my tranny fluid level.

the auto trannys on these cars are know as what are "sealed transmission" and you cannot, and supposedly you do not need to check the fluid.

The service schedule still says to change the fluid at 30K miles, but basically we cannot check it.

If it's realy that good then okay, but being of teh "old school" when it comes to mechanical devices, I still prefer to eb able to check everything!!

Once you take the pan off and drain it then how do you refill it? Does the dealer have a magic filler tool?

actually, yes - yes they do have a "magic tool" (Automatic Transmission Flush and Fill Machine) - at least according to my workshop manual. If you want to use the "manual" method you need in the least a vacume pump kit and a fluid injector device.

FWIW, let me share what a Ford mechanic told me.

The "drain plug" isn't really a drain. It opens the bottom of a tube that sticks up into the A/T. When the car is level, on a lift, and the A/T is warmed up to 90 degrees (he didn't say F or C), opening the plug gives access to the tube. Of course, a couple ounces of fluid spills out. The correct level is when the fluid is level with the top of the tube. The level is "checked" by squirting in more fluid until it overflows back down the tube.

Sounds messy to me. I have not checked it to see what happens.

Makes sense! There just had to be a way of checking the level. Kinda works like the differential, fill it until it starts spilling out. If you open it now and some comes out then it's full. If none comes out you might need to top it off. I'll just leave it alone for now and hope I don't have to deal with it anytime soon!

Cool

My company remanufactures the 5R55S transmission. There is no need to check the fluid unless you have a leak. This transmission is different in many ways from past designs. Our techs use a special machine to fill the transmissions prior to shipment. They are installed at factory and at dealerships already filled and ready to go. This is new for Ford but not new to the industry. VW has been doing it for years.

After about 25K miles of racing I think it needs to be changed though. Even if it hasn't leaked a drop.

Do these trannys have filters?
