Default Rattling from the rear...

Hey, Im just looking for some ideas on what to check for on this rattling noise im getting from the rear. It mainly sounds like its coming from the passenger side. I installed the Mac axleback on my 06 GT a week ago but 3 days after the install it started to rattle on take offs in first and second but only under 2k rpms. And I also noticed it doesnt start rattling till the car has been driving for a good 10 mins or so. Could it be the bolts rattled loose or maybe something else? The only thing that has me confused is why it only starts doing after I drive the car for a little while. Any ideas on what to look for would be much appreciated, Thanks.

Double check the hangers, that was my problem on my x-pipe.

Good Luck:thumbsup

I had the same problem. It wasn't the hangers. The axlebacks needed a spot weld. Cost me all of $15 and 15 minutes at the exhaust place. No more rattles.

Hey woodj, What do you mean by it needed a spot weld? I checked every bolt over the weekend and tightened them tight as possible and it still rattles after 10 mins or so of driving.

The trunk liner may be the rattle problem

I recently posted on AFM about a rear rattle coming from the passenfer rear side. I would check the inside trunk liner. On either side of the deck lid, there is one panel clip (one on each side). Each side has a clip that slips over a stud. The liner secures to the clip with a plastic plug insert. The problem is that these clips (used predominately throughout the vehicle) fit really loose on the studs and will rattle even when the liner is secured with the plugs.

How to resolve:
I cut a 2" long piece of rubber tape (one for each side) and folded it over the fender stub. Take a utility knife and cut an 'X' into the hole to allow for the plug insert. Reattach the clips squarly over the studs; they should be nice and tight. Reattach the liner with the plugs and you should hear any more rattles.

Hopefully, this will resolve your rattle. Otherwise, you should check:
  • spare tire - make sure its tight
  • lock latch trim cover - edges of cover make rub on underside of deck lid. I attached the felt side of a velcro strip by folding over the edge of the cover.
Good luck!

Check the clearence between the brackets on the MAC mufflers, and the Ford hangers. On the MAC setup I used to have on my '05, the brackets were welded to the mufflers in such a way that when the exhaust system was warm, and hence the metal it was made of had expanded a bit, the MAC hangers would hit the metal outer part of the factory hangers...

Sounds like the same thing.

I had the same problem on a 94 Supra. It amazed me how far the exhaust system would shift when it got hot. In my case the tailpipe was hitting the tow hook, yet when it was cold I had a good half inch of clearance.

hey torch vert I know this is old but what did you do about it? I have a problem with rattling which I am 99% sure is coming from the hangars of the exhaust system I just put in, but when I tried to fill up the gap between the rubber mounting bracket and the hangar with a stick, it came out. So what can you do about it?
