Question Installing a throttle body

Okay guys, I am on a roll here (after installing my plenum cover and strut tower brace)and am about to get very brave. I am about to install my new billet 62mm throttle body and throttle body spacer. As I am reviewing my my parts, I notice that neither the throttle body nor throttle body spacer came with a gasket of any kind. Before I take apart my engine to make the install, are gaskets required for this? Or should I use some silcone to make a gasket?

The intake manifold will have the gasket in it.

I had a little bit of trouble getting the spring underneath the cover to fit. I believe the instructions said to rotate it 3/4 of a turn before putting it all togeather. I think I had to almost turn a full 360.

I also had a little trouble with the bracket for the alternator. the TB was hitting the bump in the middle of the bracket. I had to use a bench grinder and grind about a 1/2 inch of the TB down. Maybe about 1/4 inch was needed depth wise. I have the Granatelli TB though. A friend has the moto blue (name?) and he didn't have to grind his at all.

Good luck on the install!

Well if the intake has the gasket, how about the throttle body spacer, is there a gaskeket or silcon need between the throttle body and the spacer?

I still have my stock throttle body but I did in install a TB spacer - there is the gasket that is attached to the engine intake manifold side that stays put, and then another gasket between the TB spacer and the throttle body - in other words, you need gaskets on each side.

Sorry for the newbie question but what are the advantages of having an aftermarket TB. I would imagine that you need to tune for it right? Oh and how many HP's did you gain if any? And if you don't mind me asking how much did you guys spend on one? Thank you.

No worries on the questions. The advantage of the throttle body is a larger diameter givers you more air. When working conjunction with a CAI, you get more colder air, which equals more horsepower. Yes, you should retune for it for best results. Between my throttle body and spacer, the manufacturer of each claims as much as 10 hp gain from each piece. I have found it closer to about 14-15 hp between the two. As for cost, my throttle body was about $380 and the spacer was about $50.

Cool thanks for the info. I think those are the next mods I will get. What brand of TB & spacer do you have?

No worries, anytime. My TB spacer is made by MMR. My throttle body is from Florida Motor Sports. Got both on ebay.

Don't waste your money on the spacer. They are worthless.

Does installing larger TB void the warranty, or are you worried about that?

And don't waste your money on a throttle body, the stock one is more than adaquate unless you're making big HP numbers. It's more "bling" than "zing".

I'm still running a stock TB, and according to my local tracks, I'm too fast already.

Probably the worst $300 investment I've made in this car.
