Default Rock chip paint repair - Help

OK - after a year of driving I got my first serious rock chip. It's actually a series of three. Looks like I took a hit in the center of the door from a passing vehicle. Anybody have any experience touching these up? I'm concerned because it's in a highly visible spot. It's small enough not to require major repair and there is no body damage - just paint. It's clear through to the white undercoat and really stands out on the Torch Red.

I hadn't driven my car more than 15 minutes before hearing what I thought was a rock hit the windshield. Turned about to be a rock hitting the hood leaving a chip down to what looked like metal. I bought my car used, in the rain, and found a few other scratches later on, and seem to notice small ones every time I look.

I used the touch up paint that you can get from the dealer or automotive shop, but it leaves a blob of paint rather than just filling in the scratch. I settled for that, figuring that at least the metal was protected. Then I found Langka, http://www.langka.com/index.php?osCs...354273a2be6c51.

I only ordered their kit yesterday, so I can't give a testimonial, but it sure sounds good from the web page. The company provides great communication, and ships quickly though. I'll try to post some before and afters once I receive the kit and try it out.

youre right...that kit sounds awesome....you HAVE to take pics for us!!! as for the torch red having a white undercoat.....why cant my silver stang have a white undercoat...i have black...whats up with that anyway? do they just want a ding to stand out or what? what a sense of humor they have...my black stang has a white undercoat too...would it kill them to give my black one a black undercoat so that no scratch would show?

Yeah - I remember when they used red oxide for dark cars and grey for light ones. I thought they dipped all cars now days and used the white for all of them. I'm sure it has to do with the reflectivity of the final color. As for the kit above - it seems a little expensive. My guess is the "Blob Remover" is simple paint thinner and the "Cleaner" is alcohol or acetone. I ordered my touch up (dealer parts guy told me there is no such color as Torch Red - I had to show him otherwise) and I'm going to use 1500 grit to sand the blob and clearcoat over the repair. I'll try the technique on a smaller less noticible chip on the edge of the door.

Default Update on Langka Paint Chip Kit

I got the Langka kit in and tried it out today (see earlier post for link). This kit works exactly as advertized. I was able to remove an unsightly paint blob from a scratch repair I did two weeks ago and now I can't see where the scratch was.

The blob remover did remove paint from some very superficial clear coat scratches. I repainted them and will try again with less rubbing next time. Some repairs I made to larger chips had shrunk, so the paint didn't fill the chip all the way. I've repainted those too and will use the blob remover tomorrow unless a third coat is needed to fill the hole.

Sorry, but I couldn't get good close up pictures with my camera so you'll have to take my word for it. This kit is easy to use and does exactly what it says it does.

That doesn't sound good bro! You removed paint? You have to go through the clear coat to get at paint … correct? I have the "blobs" in a few spots, but haven't tried any method to remove them. I sent away for color match paint and bought touch-up paint at the dealer. Nothing matches my silver '05 very well.

Yes, I removed paint. But not OEM paint, touch-up paint.

Repairing scratches involves putting some touch-up paint at one end of the scratch and smearing it into the scratch with your finger or a plastic card that comes with the Langka kit. It doesn't matter if you smear the touch-up paint all over the clear coat because you're going to remove it with the blob remover without any damage to the OEM finish.

Larger chips are filled with touch-up paint and allowed to dry. if the paint shrinks as it dries and the chip is still depressed, give it a second or third coat. When you're done and you have an elevated blob, use the blob remover.

Here's the instructions for a quick repair, http://www.langka.com/paint_chip_repair.php#5minute. Scroll through the document for instructions on other types of repair.

Like I said, I'm very happy with the product on my two week old blob. Tomorrow I'll be removing blobs from some chips that were deeper and had to be filled in more.

I use the Ford touch-up paint and approximately 15 minutes after I use some 3M compound to hand polish the area. This takes care of the excess i.e. blob that the touch-up paint brush leaves.

Good Lunch !
