It is not legal to run a car with-out cats unless it is a certain year... VERY OLD CARS... No-Cats will definitly give you more power and the sound is awesome. Sometimes you may be able to get the same power and sound out of High-Flow cats. But they are by far, why more expensive... If I am incorrect, please correct, to my knowledge...
I have a question, has anyone tried the NO-CATS and the CEL light has come on? If it does, does it make the car run slower? Does anyone know if the computers are OBD II on 06 Mustangs? Does anyone know where I could find 02 Simulators?
KJ, if it is illegal w/out CATS then why would you use the off-road pipe? Also, quick question you said that the pro-chamber setup sounds more old-school than any other. Is there any negatives with the Pro-chambers, more restrictive then most?
They say Off-road Use only, but who can stop a regular person from buying them and saying he will use them for the track only. ANY CATS WILL BE MORE RESTRICTIVE NO MATTER HOW MUCH MORE THAN NO-CATS.
The prochamber I have no idea on... it does give the old school sound. Havent seen one for a GT V8 yet. Only for V6.
So if I get pulled over, all I have to say is I put them on for the track? Just curious.
If you get pulled over and they know you have no cats, you're being charged with that federal crime. (Yes, it's a criminal matter.) It's not that you can use the track as an excuse to get the off-road pipes, it's that if you get those pipes, the only place you can legally use the car is on the track. Legally, you would have to trailer the car to the track if you had the off-road pipes.
It is not legal to drive the vehicle on public roads without catalytic converters if it originally came with them from the factory. It is also illegal to remove any functioning catalytic converter, even to replace it with another catalytic converter. Technically, from a legal standpoint, you can only remove a broken catalytic converter.
That said, if you live where there are no emissions tests, there's no way that they will ever find out. Matter of fact, the last guy I know who removed the cats on his car is a police officer. They don't care. The only way anyone would ever find out is if you have visual inspections. Most new cars will pass emissions even without a catalytic converter if they are running properly.

I know two instances when this happened here in southern Ohio...
One at the emissions test we don't do anymore... he said he didn't know, blamed the previous owner who blamed his previous speedshop who got in trouble!
One was reported for driving a loud car, pulled over and the State Trooper even had a stick with a mirror on it al'a border control. Settled in FEDERAL court for just under $5,000!

Not worth the risk IMO. KJ I live in Dayton and we just ended our emissions testing program but they are looking into using another method. Just another excuse to take more of my money. Also sounds like the gains are minimal w/o CATS anyway. Thanks for the info. :thumbsup

Kinda depends on how and where you drive. I grew up in the middle of nowhere (mostly cornfields) so there's really no worry about there ever being emissions testing there. My officer friend who removed the cats on his car ('76 'Vette) doesn't use the car as a daily driver either, and the exhaust isn't terribly loud, so he's very unlikely to get stopped for it.
In my experience (and this is not scientific in any way), the only way you'll get caught for something like this is if you have emissions testing or you piss off the officer who stops you and he or she wants to find anything possible to nail you on.

KJ, how are the Kooks with stock exhaust?
How much would it cost for the install?
Would it require a tune? I would go with the CATS.
Thanks
colljo, not to impersonate KJ, but check out the web site for MD Motorsports in Cincy. They've got a good deal for the Kooks with cats. I'm having mine done in about 2 weeks, once they arrive. Not sure about what the install will cost, give Danielle a call, they're open M-F 10a-6pm and she'll get you a quote. Yes, a tune will be needed, since the A/F mixture I'm sure will change. Spoke to one of mech's their last week and he said a customer who had the Kooks with Magna-Flow mufflers didn't care for the the sound, put his stock mufflers back on and preferred that sound better. The MF's made the exhaust sound a little "tinny" he said. I've got Flowmaster's and the exhaust now is very deep and throaty and believe with the Kooks I'm gonna like the sound, if not I'll consider putting the stocks back on too.
