Post Anyone useing Royal Purple products?

Specifically, does anyone use Royal Purple products for their STANDARD transmission 05 or 06 Mustang GT for the DRIVE TRAIN? I use the RP 5w20 motor oil but want to hear from owners useing RP for the trans axle. Is it an approved product for warranty issues, and likes or dis-likes? Thanks.

Asked my Performance Ford Dealer about the Royal Purple products, was thinking of having it added when I changed out the rear gearing and was told unless I did lots of racing> drag and/or road course, the Royal Purple would not be worth the extra cost, that the standard Ford products were good and not so expensive. They do use the Royal Purple in their GT500C that they road race and sell it at the dealership, so I don't think it would cause any warranty issues.

Popular Hotrodding this month did a bolt on dyno test on an '05 Mustang. They had planned to switch all the lubricants to Redline. They mentioned that they decided not to change the trans oil because it came with synthetic from the factory.

I had used the Royal Purple Sychromax in my 02 GT 5 speed (same TR3650 as in the 05/06) and it made it shift much smoother. I was very happy with it. Many people who drove it would comment that it didnt suffer from the 'gear clash' that it so common with these transmissions. And I never had the TSB fix performed on it either.

A nit-pick, but the Mustang does not have a transaxle. A transaxle is a transmission that is cast integrally with the differential (as in most mid-engine cars, most rear-engine cars, and most FWD cars).

That out of the way, as long as it meets the viscosity and API specs for the fluid, it cannot legally void your warranty.

I will never deviate from factory lubricants again in the trans and rear end. I used Redline in the Getrag 6 speed in my 94 Supra. After about a year the internal shifting mechanism began to stick to the point where it was almost impossible to find third gear when the trans was cold. It turns out that something in the Redline lubricant had caused a plastic bushing to swell. The bushing was not replaceable so I had no choice but to replace what Toyota termed the front clutch housing which cost me over a thousand bucks. This happened to dozens of Supras. Everyone swore initally how much smoother the trans shifted with the Redline. That didn't last.

I'm having my gears and a Detroit Truetrac thrown in my car Tues. I went to get Ford gear oil and the dealership bandits tried to charge me $22 a quart (so much for "not so expensive" at least locally)

I went to a local NAPA and got RP gear oil for only $9 a quart (which suddenly seemed cheap....)

If the Redline fluid you used met the manufacturer's specifications for the API rating (note that API rating is NOT viscosity), then that's Toyota's fault, not the lubricant's. If it didn't meet the API rating, then it's your fault, not the lubricant's.

There are several different API ratings for gear lube and using the wrong one absolutely will cause damage. In some cases, the wrong API spec will even eat away at the synchros themselves. Many manual transmissions don't even use gear oil anymore, they use ATF or engine oil. Gear oil would damage those transmissions too.

Hey Torch,
I see your from Boston. Who's doing your gear work? What is a Detroit truetrac? I'm from the Cape and I'm always looking for places that work on the Mustangs. :thumbsup

Hey!

I'm getting my gears done at LaFerriere Racing in R.I. ( http://www.laferriereracing.com/ )

These guys know their way around a Mustang, and their labor price was very reasonable.

A Detroit Truetrac is a limited slip differential (similar to a Ford Trac-lok). It uses all steel gearing to accomplish the limited slip task (unlike the Trac-Lok which uses fiber clutches). Costs a bit more, but transfers more torque than a Trac-lok and no clutch plates to wear out and require rebuilding.
