Default rims and gearing

do biger rims make the gearning go up or down

i have 3.55 18" inch rims

The only thing that changes your effective gearing is the overall tire diameter. eg, a stock 235/55-17 tire has the same diameter as a 285/45-18 (I think 26.7 inches if memory serves). Therefore gearing is the same with either wheel/tire.

so what if i put 20" rims on, will the 3.55 go up or down

it depends on your tire height not the wheel

I was slightly off. The stock 235/55-17 is about 27 inches in diameter. A 255/35-20 has the same diameter so the gearing would remain the same. Look up "Plus One and Plus Two" for an explanation of tire sidewall height vs. wheel diameter. Basically as you increase the diameter of the wheel you need to decrease the height of the sidewall, ie. lower the profile, in order to maintain the same overall tire diameter.
