I am reposting this here instead of a general forum to get a bit more advice.
I purchased an 06 Mustang GT yesterday. I am very excited with this purchase. This is my first new car purchase (all others have been used). First muscle car, first Ford, first V8, first everything. I am not new to speed though. I was a crotch rocket guy until my new 05 Yamaha R1 was stolen.
Anyway, speed and power are a must for me, and I plan on doing a lot of stuff to the car, spread over some time of course. My questions to this community is this:
What mods can I do right away cheaply ($0-$800) to up the hp, and looks of the car?
What mods can I do in med price range (up to $2500)?
What mods can I do to make this one real badass car (top end parts/mods)?
I will probably treat this like a 3 stage work in progress.
My dad paints cars for a living, so I will be playing with photoshop awhile before I make a decision on how that will look.
Thank you all for your feedback, and look forward to talking more about cars with you.
edit: I added Flowmaster mufflers already and am looking for a cold air kit and performance chip, but not sure which ones to use. Any advice on these would be helpful. I am guessing a supercharger is about 4 to 5 months away and need to know everything that should be changed prior to adding it.

Welcome. What I've read all these months on things to change right away … wheels, tires, brakes, complete suspension change, disguise the whole body w/ after market stick on fenders, bumpers, badges, stealth light /lense covers, hood, seats, stereo, exhaust system, gears, transmission, foglights, rearview mirror, side mirrors, the engine, (if you have a spare) you're lucky your dad paints so now you can change the color and add stripes, flames, murals, names, numbers and so on. I may have missed a few things here, so bear w/ me.
Ah, never mind that. Have fun w/ whatever you decide to do.
Just my thoughts, since I seem to have hit all the mods (except a supercharger), since you already got the Flowmaster exhaust (good plan), next get the CAI and the tune (as mentioned). Now if you are talking less than $800 total for stage one, well you are almost there. If 0-$800 for any particular mod..then headers, under drive pulleys, and even a throttle body will all increase your hp (plus the previously mentioned items). Then for stage two, go for the rearend gears, brakes, full suspension (shocks/struts, springs, antisway bars, etc), wheels/tires, short throw shifter, and minor cosmetics (like chin spoilers, rear spoilers, etc). Then on to stage three...change hood, paint, add supercharger w/intercooler, and finish any mod not already done. Then you should have an ass-kicking GT that should make even the GTOs shudder. But that is just me...
Thanks guys for the replys. What CAI and chip do you recommend? Those are next on my list for the engine. Probably this week.
Brother in law owns a "Tire Barn" so the wheels and tires will be at cost. Dad paints, but I live in Maryland and he is in Texas. I am currently on vacation, but am giving myself a little time to mess with paint schemes on paper/computer before deciding. He is getting really good with an airbrush, so there will most likely be realistic fire somewhere in the paint.
Not sure how much these cost or if they are legal, but sure would make the wheels unique. www.tiretagz.com
NO body kits will be put on while I am in Maryland due to the snow season, but the hood will be changed when I can find something I like.
Most of this will be paid for by online poker winnings, so the better I do, the quicker I get the stuff done. Wish me luck

Rice it? The tiretagz? What are you talking about?
Click on the shortcut for tiretagz..you will see what we mean!!! The illuminated wheels are a bit much for muscle car entusiasists, it is something that would likely be done to one of the cars in the sport compact market...such as a Honda Civic or an Acura RSX or such.
Oh come on now, putting those on doesn't even come close to making it a rice burner. The car is still all muscle, or will be. It does however make the car more unique than others out there. If I wanted a rice burner, I would have brought back the R34 I was driving while in Japan. Should have anyway.

Please go and get the R34 back if you plan on purchasing those rims.
Sorry, Tiretagz=100% RICE. Without a doubt. 98% of those on this forum will agree.
Not trying to be an A$$, but you asked.
You're driving the epitome of American muscle. Honor the tradition and the legend. For every mod you make ask yourself this question: What would Carroll Shelby Do? (WWCSD) I've never met the man but I'd bet a month's pay he wouldn't be putting those on any car with his name on it.

P.S. If you have to ask who Carroll Shelby is take that car right back to the dealer.
Did I just quote myself?

agatt..I'm still pretty new to this forum myself, but the first thing you will conclude from the members is we are very protective of the mustang, it's history and it's future. Many of us have been around a long time, being previous owners of the mustang of years past and some still owners of that nostalgic era. So when you speak of doing things to the mustang that deter from it's heritage, you will get criticized. Recall your history. The mustang is one of the original muscle cars. We're proud owners of that name sake, therefore we have an obligation to caution those that may consider blemishing it's reputation. So don't take offense when you receive criticism about some of the different mods you are considering, rather take it as a suggestion, that maybe you're about to embark in a direction that may offend the mustang's long tradition.
Maybe all prospective Mustang owners should be required to submit to a background check before being handed the keys. Seriously though, I've gotta go with the boys on those wheels. But... It's your ride.
