Default 18x9 vs 18x10 tire question

I plan on purchasing the "Chrome 2005+ Deep Dish Bullitt Wheel (18x9)" wheels this week, and have a question about tires. I will need all season tires since I will be driving on snow also so I was looking at the Prielli Zero Nero M+S Ultra High Performance All-Season tires.

My question is this. What size tire can I get on the 18x9's. I will go with the 255/45 for the front, but can I go to the 285/40's on the back, or will I need to go with the 18x10's to make 285/40's work? I would almost rather go with the 18x10's for the rear, but need to know if the clearance is ok without any alterations.

Thanks for the help.

I've run into a couple of '05 and '06 owners that have 285s out back on an 18 X 9" wheel -- seems to be no problems.

I've attached a pic of my car with an 18 X 9" wheel with a 275 tire so you can judge the sidewall and rim proportion; I hope this is helpful in deciding how a 285 tire would look.

There are no clearance issues with an 18 X 10 wheel on the back with 285's. Even with the car lowered there are no problems.

As woodj says, there are no issues with clearance for the 285/40 tires on 9 or 10" wheels. The only issue may be if you are getting the full performance potential of your tires when you mount the 285s on a 9" wheel. The sidewall angle would be better on a 10" (or even wider) wheel. Better sidewall angle allows the tire to perform better in cornering/lateral traction. The Tire Rack web site has a reference which can be used to match the best wheel width for each tire width.

ummm.... 285's on snow? be sure to let us know how well that works. I'd get a set of skinny snow tires on the stock rims for the winter months.

Get the 18x10´s, AmericanMuscle.com offers those and you can actually take a look at other Mustangs to see the staggered look and compare, there aren't any issues with clearance at all, actually, that's one of the things that make Mustangs attractive, the fact that you can put wider rims and tires on the back to make them look awesome. Get some 315's for the back, that will make your Stang look even more agressive, and there's still no problem with clearance.
