After break-in and before hitting the track, I would like to install engine and trans oil temp gauges. (When is Ford going to start adding auto trans temp for god's sake?)
Anyone added these and can they give advice on brand of gauge and some best practices?
I don't have a data logger, but are these temps something that is tracked by an internal computer? Can gauges tap into this info if it is available?

Im pretty sure they are mechanical gauges and dont tap into the computer for anything.
Autometer has some nice guages and have a good reputation.
Those pods are really meant for Boost and Fuel pressure, you alreay have engine temp and oil pressure, so Im just curious, do you want the guages on the pillar just for the looks of it?

Traveling around the track at 120+ mpg, and nailing it is quite a different environment than street driving. Temps run a lot higher, and the best indication of how engine and trans are holding up is temp. Pressure gauge on the engine oil (barring a total pump failure) and water temp will show trouble long after oil temp has demonstrated an extreme condition. Without a gauge on the tranny, you risk blowing pump seals (and expensive rebuilds) like I have twice on my Ford truck.
Btw, if my under the hood inspection is correct, it looks as if Ford added a separate oil cooler for the transmission instead of heating the fluid with the H2O radiator. A bit hard to see, but if this is so...Yes!

I have the SOS Pod and Autometer Electrical gauges - works out great, and I think the Classic Chrome series matches the interior and gauges. I got my GT without the IUP, so no Oil pressure or Voltmeter gauges in the dash. The quality of the SOS pod is top-notch. I used to be a Ford tech and the factory oil pressure gauge is not really a gauge. Too many customers complained about needle fluctuations, so Ford re-designed the gauges to be a reverse idiot light - more than 7 psi and the gauge needle is right in the middle - no needle movement but a very inaccurate oil pressure reading.
In other words, I completely understand why he wants the pillar pod - even if he does have IUP.

Thanks for the information you added. I can't find the Classic Chrome series in Autometer's site. Does it have a new name? (www.autometer.com) Also, how well did the finish of the SOS pod match the factory interior? Any complaints.
If anyone has experience and pics of the Autometer pillars, I would like to hear about it.

Oh ok. I was just curious. I didnt realize you were racing your car. I agree that the standard Ford guages are fairly usless. lol
I have the speed of sound pod and 2 autometer electric guages. I used the Oil Temp and oil preasure. It works great! The oil temp is the scary one, try climbing a grade in 4th gear doing about 90 and see where your oil temp is! I can also tell the difference when i use synthetic Mobil 1, the temps are noticably lower.
