Noticed an odd rattle coming from one of my mufflers yesterday so I took it off an shook it. A little chuck of CAT substrate fell out. I'm wondering if I could be at risk of a plugged cat or if it's just breaking up inside. Thoughts.
separate the overaxle pipes from the H-Pipe and stick a shop vac in the overaxle end. I had a huge piece caught near the overaxle hump which can plug the exhaust and make your engine go BOOM.

I'll have to take it apart tomorrow. Started it up for 10 seconds tonight and she started to knock bad so it must be plugged. Only ran a few seconds and shut her down.
I would replace them with the stockers. Aftermarket cats are usually junk when compared to stock.
And in alot of cases, they dont work well enough after a couple years to pass the inspection sniffer anyway.
Stock won't fit my long tube headers. I'm probably going to clear the cats and just run them as race pipes. I can't afford to have them come apart again and grenade my engine. I don't have emissions here anyway, and if we do get it down the road, it's just an OBDII test, no dyno/sniffer.
Stock may not be better! I blew up my muffler!! The system is made for emissions, and enough sound to sell you the car.... it cannot handle the pressure from more modded cars...

KJ- See any (performance) problems with me just hollowing out the cats? My rear O2s are already off. Or would I be better of just pulling them and replacing that section with a race pipe?
Well I took off the cats. What an absolute mess as you can see from my driveway. The passenger side had completely disintegrated inside. Some of the substrate was actually sideways blocking the cat. Driver side was ok but I went ahead and hollowed out both. Instant performance increase leads me to believe that the passenger side cat was going bad for some time.
Wow! Reminds of the one that blew on the dyno... also passenger side... that must be the side the one American work on at FoMoCo... j/k!
Yeah, good thing I found this out this week since I'm taking her to be dyno'd on the 27th. Guess I was sitting on a potential timebomb. Well they're just two hollow cans now

Are you sure the overaxle pipes are clear? This was what was wedged in mine

Wow that's a big chunk! I vacuumed it clean like you suggested and whacked it pretty good with a rubber mallet. I accounted for all the large pieces so I think I'm ok. Seems like it's flowing good now.
