Default Magnaflow reg. catback vs magnapack catback

Hello all. I was looking on the magnaflow website and was wondering what the difference is between the reg. catback dual exhaust and the magnapack catback dual exhaust? I know the magnapack catback dual exhaust says it's performance tuned and has more of an aggressive tone but they're the same price on the website?

Thanks

Catback, huh?? Our cats are on the front of the H, so there's really no such thing for the S197. Unless they're talking of a new catted midpipe, new overaxle pipe and axleback. Don't see how they could be the same price then. I think you'd be fine with just the axleback.

I agree sltwagon. I was looking for confirmation. Most stuff I read/researched for the 05 and up have been axleback. I've also read that Ford built a 2.5" S.S pipe that is mandrel bent to the mufflers. Sounds like there is no need for a catback, if applicable! I'll go with axleback.

Before you decide, take a quick look at the Pypes Violators. Same straight through design at the Magnaflows/Magnapacks. All T-304 SS and sound really nice. http://www.pypesexhaust.com/. Brenspeed has them for under $300.

Here is an example of my old set-up with the Magnaflow Tru-X with hi-flo cats and the magnapacks.

I went with longtubes and had to change the mid-pipe but I still have the magnapacks.

Man, I can't believe how difficult it is to decide on which mufflers. As many others have probably done, I've done tons of research on them and have heard many sound clips. I definately will go with axle backs over the so called cat-backs, but I can't afford the mid-pipe or header upgrades. I want it fairly loud to draw attention to them and for me to feel cool too, but I don't want to draw the cops attention. It seems like Corsas/Bassanis/SLP's are mentioned the most. I wish there was a thread that had a poll on how many people owned what. Can polls be done on this website forum?

Hi GT Runner,

The MagnaFlow brand "MagnaPack" Cat-Backs are fully stainless steel and include a VERY smooth set of stainless steel tubes that bolt (actually they clamp just like O.E.), up to a stock location O.E. or third party mid-pipe that then go over the axle to a set of louder "stinger" style rear mufflers packed with very dense rock wool and finished off with a highly polished set of SS tips.

MagnaFlow's regular "MagnaFlow" Cat-Back system uses similar (but different!), pair of stainless steel tubes that connect in the same fashion as the MagnaPacks and utilize a pair large rectangular mufflers packed with rock wool. The "MagnaFlow" system is much quieter than the "MaqgnaPack" system. When new a MagnaFlow system is acutally quieter than stock until th rock wool losens up a bit.

I have installed both in my S197GT but the MagnFlows did not fit my early chassis well and were really quiet, stock level quiet even after 1,000 hard miles! So I opted to install a MagnaPack Cat-Back and WOW did they wake up the car on the dyno! I didn't think they would make that much of a difference but they did! I had one problem, though I love the sound and the power my wife hated the SPL so after I had them on the car and dyno'd them (7 days!), I pulled them out. The problem was that I had a MagnaFlow Tru-X Pipe w/high-flow cats which basically sound about the same as running an off-road X-pipe which is to say LOUD! BUt that said the combination of MagnaFlow Tru-X Pipe w/high flow OBDII compliant cats and very smooth zero restriction MagnaPack stingers made a stong if loud 17RWHP.

I have them sitting in my garage if you want to buy them. Like new condition $350 plus shipping or I'll deliver in or around L.A.50-70 miles or so. PM or call me if interested.

Cheers/Chip

SLP LMs with the stock manifolds and H are great. I ran them for 6 months but ended up pulling after I installed the LTs. Great sound and look really nice.

SportsPix, you had mentioned that quote "I had one problem, though I love the sound, and the power, my wife hated the SPL". What does SPL mean? I too like the sound of the magnapacks and they seem to be the same price as many axlebacks.

Hi GT_Runner,

Sorry about that SPL is Sound Presure Level or the measurement of how "loud" a sound is. With the MagnaFlow Tru-X Pipe w/high flow cats the MagnaPacks are just too loud for my wife so I had to take them off after a week. With the Stock Ford lo-flow catted H-pipe they sound very nice and are easy on the ears though not as mellow as stock but just right.

Cheers/Chip

Wife liked it with the hi-flos and magnapacks. Now that I went with Kooks, offroad and the Magnapacks...she hates it. Mine aren't coming off though and this way she never wants to drive it. Of course she thinks her 530i is the bomb.

I have the Kooks with catless x-pipe option (it also comes with hi-flo cats). When I got the Kooks longtubes...it just comes with the x-pipe so I sold the Tru-X.
Try this video:

The above is a dyno run with them on. You get an idea of what it sounds like during acceleration but there is a lot of other noise from dyno and fan.

This one is just an exhaust clip sitting still:

I have some "trumpeting" but it doesn't bother me. It sounds wicked WOT.
