Unhappy Electric water pump failing??

I think I'm the first... Sounds like a bearing may be starting to seize. Looks like I'll be pulling it off and reinstalling the stocker temporarily until I can sort this out. More to come.

Jeez, that sucks. It says the pump should last about 300 hours? I've had 1-3 codders so I may be wrong. (%

I'm going to pull it off and see. I've heard of at least one other case where the impeller was too far on the shaft and causing it to bind. There is a set screw to adjust. I'm hoping that's all it is.

Have a Capecodder for me... I'm stuck at work until 6am.

I just don't know if I could trust an electric water pump. To vital to the system... its hard enough for me to trust the fuel pump.

I think they're generally pretty reliable. I'm hopeful this can be recovered and I haven't damaged it internally. If not, it's still under warranty. Either way, I'll stick with the electric pump. It cools so much better than stock.

Default Idler

Hey, Stlwagon, is your pump the one with the idler pulley? If so, could that be what's making the noise?

Yeah it is. Good point. I'll pull the belt tomorrow and check it.

Hi stlwagon,

Nope I beat you by 2 1/2 months. Mine worked great but started to sound funny so I pulled it and they gave me a new one. I just never got around to putting it back in. Maybe I'll get motivated and beat you to it.

And here I thought I was just special What failed on it? Was it an internal bearing or just the idler going bad? If I need a new one, it's going to sit in the box until next summer!

This is why I have not done the eH2O pump thing yet.
Too many things can go wrong with an eH2O pump (IMHO)

Hi stlwagon,

The pump worked great as you know but it started to make a slight noise that I could hear when the key was on and I was under the hood. I don't know if it was serious or not but I pulled it anyway and they gave me a new unit without bickering about it. It may have only been the idler pulley noise, I don't know if there was a problem or not and they never told me. I'm in SoCal and the cooling difference on hot days in traffic and the ability to cool the engine while at rest were important features to me.

stlwagon, that totally sucks. The electric water pump is one mod I've not tried yet, not because I'm afraid it'll break, just never really got around to it.

Where did you get it? What brand? Do you have an estimate of how much RWHP you got out of it?

It's a Meziere pump. Honestly can't remember where I bought it. I'll have to look for the receipt. I figure maybe 8 rwhp. Mfg says 12 but I think that's a little high. I'll pull it off tomorrow and see what I find.

Hi 5twenty,

The Meziere is a very high quality pump and in theory should have just as long a useful service life as a mechanical water pump. If you live in a hot area with traffic an electric water pump is a fine addition to your engine combination and it reduces your parasitic engine losses to the tune of about 8RWHP peak (seen on my own dyno testing anyway).

If you drag race in particular brackets or ET racing this is a very good addition to help with your consistancy because you can leave with exactly the same coolant temps. Combined with an automatic transmissions the S197GT should be more repeatable than without.

I agree with Sportspix. The pump is high quality and the better cooling is worth it in itself even without the nominal HP gains. Other than his and mine, I've heard of no other failures. I have heard of electrical relay issues but that is unrelated to the physical pump.
