I have an '05 GT built in March, with 25K miles. I always use my parking brake. Today my brake cable broke with the brake engaged, leaving me stranded. The Ford dealership said there is a TSB out on it, saying there is a boot on the cable that will deteriorate. I'm not sure if he said it has something to do with the temperature or not (17 degrees today). Maybe KJ or someone could look up the TSB number and post it. I would recommend getting it replaced before you get stuck somewhere this winter!

The part is not stocked, so Betty is in the shop for two days....

That sucks...I use my parking brake all the time, even in my garage.
It deteriorates only after a few years??? That sounds odd. Hope you
get it fixed fast and no one else has that problem.

If there is indeed a service bulletin out, it is a known problem, and likely to happen to many of us. I think recalls may be safety related only, thus the brake cable will have to fail first before they will fix it. Maybe if someone were to tell the shop that the hand brake felt squishy... Good luck to all.

Hi Dave,
I was wondering, if the cable broke or parted how were you stranded? I ask because the parking brakes are only engaged when the cable is under tension so to me it sounds like something else was broken if the rear brakes did not disengage.
Cheers

Thanks for the TSB Sport. Yeah, when I said "broke", I meant no worky. All I know is my brakes were still engaged, the handle would flop freely, and the dealership is replacing the cables. Unfortunately, inclimate weather has delayed delivery of the cables, and the dealership still has Betty parked in their garage (6 days). They did rent me a Kia Rio, which is mucho-pimping I must say! Nothing like going from 300 Hp to 30 Hp...

it happened to me too today. i had to drive around the block a few times to heat up the brakes and then i did a burnout on an icy patch and they finally released. good thing there is a tsb on this... i dont wish anyone the trouble to go through this... its kinda frustrating
There is a TSB on this. They used cheap rubber that covers the cable by the brake housing. The rubber splits and tears and the first time it has moisture on it and below freezing outside, it freezes up. I had the same problem last year on my blue Mustang. The last time we had the oil changed at the dealer on the gray Mustang, they checked it and it was doing it also so they ordered a new set of emergency brake cables for it. I just have to take some time to drop it off at the dealer to have them put on. Take your car to the dealer and have them check it out. This affected the 05 models only but an 06 popped up with this problem.
Thanks for the info. It stuck the other morning when I was ready to go home from work (parked outside and it was under 20 degrees that night)...came unstuck after about 20 minutes of idling. This car never sees much moisture though...and it was bone dry those days.
