I have a 05 GT. Iam traveling down the road and my clutch went out. To make a long story short...my clutch disc "shattered", and now I need the entire clutch done. I have 14,000 miles on it, with minor bolt-on mods (See below). The car is not raced, so i was concerned whether it was a defective clutch. The ford dealership stated that even with the low miles they were not able to cover the clutch work, Defect or Not. Has anyone on the forum had problems with the clutch system. Your responses are welcomed with open arms. Oh...and thank you Brenspeed for your advice, you guys are great.

Interesting... The clutch on the GT is actually pretty beefy but I don't think it's completely out of the ordinary. Like you said, probably defective, but difficult/impossible to prove. That's the problem with 'consumable' parts like clutch disks and brakes. If you end up having to pay for it, might as well put in a sturdier aftermarket clutch.
I was told that a aftermarket clutch was not needed with in-town driving, and that the stock clutch would be fine, but iam worried about putting another stock clutch in. I just drive my car on the weekends, so iam alittle pissed off, but what are you gonna do... A friend told me that it was all on how the ford tech "words" the problem with the clutch, for them to cover the work. Iam not ready to divorce my wife and date a ford tech.....yet.

You're right... You don't need a stronger clutch, especially if you're not racing it. Another stocker should be fine, but I certainly understand your concern with their reliability now!
i have 1 question did you learn how do drive a stick on this car????? 2 years ago i had a 04 gt my first stick i also blew out the clutch i mean shattered the thing in little pieces!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i went to a stage 3 centerforce clutch! with my 05 i didnt waste time changing out the clutch i went straight to a aftermarket clutch. but my point is if you learn on the car you dont realize how much wear that puts on a clutch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! all i have to say dont you dare put a stock clutch on that car pay the extra for a beefed up ford racing clutch more expenseive but you will be more happy later!

I've been on this forum since the early days of the S197 and I don't remember anyone blowing up a clutch.
Personally, at the drag strip I dump the clutch at launch at 5500-6000 RPM on a 150 shot of nitrous, 400+ HP at the wheels. And I'm not talking about "feathering" the clutch like you have to do with stock tires. I dump it as hard as I can and my stock clutch has never even slipped.
Knowing those things, I would tend to think that you had a defective clutch. The clutch in the S197 is extremely robust.
But, since you have to put a new one in, buy a top aftermarket clutch and if you power up your pony you'll be good to go.

The clutch I learned to drive stick shift on has 120,000 miles on it and is still going...
Even if you're learning to drive a stick shift, you still shouldn't be putting _that much_ wear on the clutch.

I have an 08 V6 that has a problem in that when it gets cold the hydraulic clutch does not engage properly making it hard to shift without grinding gears. Anyone else have a problem like that? The car has only slightly over 7000 miles on it and I do know how to drive stick! The car has a Ford maintenance agreement so everything will be covered but am wondering if I should ask or pay extra for a heavier duty clutch or if the hydraulic fluid could be the problem. The colder it is the worse the problem, and it is kinda cold up here along Lake Erie this time of year! I did have a Ford mechanic install a Hurst Shifter so that may also be a part of the problem. I hate hydraulic clutches, anyone convert a new Mustang to a mechanical clutch?
You know David, a friend of mine at a transmission shop- I remember some time ago, im not sure if it was a V6 or a GT- told me about a clutch engagement/disengagement problem in the s197's. I believe it had something to do with the throwout bearing travel. I will ask him when i see him next week.
