Evap system leak. Let me see what else I can find.
edit: Check your gas cap for starters.
Thanks,
Not sure what you mean by evap system. Hope you or others can come up with more detailed info. I need to drive about 1000 miles this weekend and don't want to risk hurting my car. Thanks

You likely won't notice any drivability issues. A P0456 indicates a fuel vapor leak or lack of purge flow in the EVAP control system. It means a large leak has been detected. The (EVAP) emission control system prevents the escape of fuel vapors from a vehicle's fuel system.
Possible solutions:
1. Remove and reinstall the gas cap, clear the codes, and drive for a day and see if the codes come back.
2. Otherwise, replace the gas cap, and/or
3. Inspect the EVAP system for cuts/holes in tubes/hoses (you may hear a vacuum noise or smell fuel), repair if necessary
I know that this doesn't belong in this forum...but since it's the same problem on a different car, I figured I'd start here...
Let me start by saying that I know nothing about cars. I do know that I LOVE my 01 Mustang Convertible. I have had my car in the shop three times in the last couple of weeks because my service engine light keeps coming on. Well, the mechanic is a friend and told me the code (which I forgot the number) but he told me that it detected a fuel vapor leak. I went and bought a new gas cap which is what he recommended I try first. Well, that didn't work. Now, last night I got gas, and this morning I'm down to 3/4 tank. There is no way I used 1/4 tank of gas from last night leaving the pump, until this morning when I got into my car to go to work. When I was driving to work this morning, I noticed a fuel smell in the car, and started to feel nauseated. I also started to drift off, like I was going to fall asleep. I'm not sure where to even start. Honestly, I can't afford to run all the tests to find out what it is, so thought I'd start here. My mechanic said that if he can do the test, it's very expensive to do a smoke test (like I said, I have no clue what he's talking about) I don't feel safe driving the car and am ready to trade it in...

Need to have the fuel pump checked. Sounds like you're leaking gas.
P0456 is a very small leak here is some info on it most likely a Vapor Management Valve or a Canister Close Valve no fully closing.
P0456 - Evaporative Emission System Leak Detected (Very Small Leak)
Description:
The powertrain control module (PCM) monitors the complete evaporative emission (EVAP)
control system for the presence of a very small fuel vapor leak. The system failure occurs when a fuel vapor leak from an opening as small as 0.508 mm (0.020 inch) is detected by the EVAP running loss monitor test.
Possible Causes:
• Very small holes or cuts in the fuel vapor hoses/tubes
•
Loose fuel vapor hose/tube connections to the EVAP system components
•
EVAP system component seals leaking. See the Possible Causes for DTC P0442
Diagnostic Aids:
Check for a missing fuel filler cap or the integrity of the cap.
Check for loose or damaged vapor hoses. Visually inspect the EVAP canister inlet port, CV solenoid filter, and canister vent hose assembly for contamination or debris.

You defiantly have a problem need to check your fuel tank and lines for a leak.
There is a 20 dollar rubber gromet that is only available from the dealer that installs where your filler neck goes into the tank. It wears out due to moisture getting trapped and when it leaks the car will give you an evap code. Do you ever smell fuel after driving?

I'm so glad I saw this. The last 3 times I filled up, a pie pan size fuel spill was left on the ground, and when driving, if I took a turn to fast, or hit the brakes to hard, I'd smell gas. I'm gonna try the $20 fix before I take it to get looked at, might save me $ome ca$h ! Thanks !

Pull your rear seat bottom and check the drivers side where the fuel pump mounts. Pull the black plastic cover and look underneath to see if there are any signs of fuel leaking around the fuel pump locking ring.
