Anyone use plug and play harness to retain stock Shaker system?
I know there was someone on the forum who changed their head unit and reused all the stock shaker components, writing up a long post with the specifics but I could not find that post when I searched. Anyhow, this company makes a $20 harness that is plug and play to retain use of all the components if all you want to do is change out the head unit. (According to what their tech advisor told me in an e-mail). I may go this route since I want to add an integrated Sirius tuner and possibly Nav. The stock amps and speakers are good enough for my ears. Anyone have experience with this?
I recently installed a new CD player in my F-150 and was so pleased I went back and bought a new CD/DVD player for my Wife for Christmas. I bought both units through Crutchfield's. The head unit comes with a pigtail which has a plug on one end for the back. The other is just stripped.
Crutchfield supplies a new Din mount, removal tool for the old unit, and a corresponding pigtail specifically for your vehicle. All you have to do is solder the two pigtails together to make an adapter of sorts. They have excellent instructions and their customer service was highest rated in Consumer Reports.
One end of the adapter goes into the new head unit, the other into the plug that was in your old head unit. No cutting involved and all other components remain stock. It took all of about 30 minutes on my truck. I trimmed one of the pigtails down so I didn't have so much wire to stuff back in the dash, but other than that I just followed directions.

OK, so I've added a few things to it. Check my Profile - too many to list here.

Hi,
was one of the cars the mustang? Did it have the Shaker system? And it all works?
I just finished installing a Eclipse AVN5435 in my wives 2006 GT with the Shaker 500 and I kept all the speaker from the stock system. I purchase the unit from crutchfield and it came the with the wiring harness for the Eclipes to the stock wiring and the head unit kit. Just as myltlpny stated just connect them together and youR set. Check with Crutchfield for the wiring harness and head units kits.

Steverunner,
I wasn't trying to ignore your question, Ponyrider beat me to it. I installed the new head unit in my F-150, the other is going in my wife's Hyundai. There are provisions in the wiring harness for subwoofers. You just need to connect the wires. If you have any questions at all, just call Crutchfield's. Again, their service is highly rated. When you search their website for head units, they ask you questions about your vehicle and only shows you units that will fit in your vehicle. It's almost fool proof.

I went out and bought the harness made by metra it has a set of rca's which you plug into the sub input on the aftermarket head unit and the other speakers run through the speaker wires on the deck.It sounds dramaticly better than the factory head unit due to the power change of the deck itself. This also allows you to run other amps and let the factory amps run the door woofers. If you hate the big boxes in the trunk this is the way to go.The only trouble is if you get it tuned right your door mirrors vibrate so much you can't see out of them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey Steve,
I did replace my head unit with a sony and i used the wiring harness from METRA.The kit is a 2 haress kit one is the power and the speaker wires and the other is the amp wires with the RCA jacks.I ran my rca's to the subwoofer input on the back of my deck this allows complete control of the subs in the doors. Then i ran the other speakers to the speaker wires on the deck cause i believe the woofers are the only speakers powered by the amps,so be sure the deck you use is at least 40wx4.When i was done i was pretty amazed that the sound got better than having the shaker head unit,I am a big bass fan i usually rip cars apart to put in 4 12's and with this car i wasn't sure i wanted to rip the trunk apart. This makes it even tougher cause it really sounds good. The 10 minute power delay still works also, the deck stays on after turning off the car til you open a door or ten minutes passes. This upgrade really vibrates them door mirrors!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The harness you are talking about is a Metra 70-5521. It is marked as Ford 03-up Amp Harness. It comes with two harnesses, the main one and a second smaller one for the subs.
