LOL I just read that...it has good info. Well then I guess it will be stock for me then which will be cheaper anyways....I wanna go w/ this combo for the bottom end: forged cobra crank, cp pistons, manley rods w/ arp 2000 bolts
That's the same setup in my shortblock. It'll handle plenty of power!

They are used to it - LOL - if everyone were an expert on building engines they'd have no job... Go for it...

If you call Al, don't worry about not knowing anything. He'll teach anyone that wants to learn. Just don't hammer him with learning questions on your first call In all honesty, tell him what your goal is and he'll ask you questions to know your direction, then give recommendations. I.E. what is it's primary use-drag 20%, street 80% or to whatever percentage. What kind of power level? What kind of power adder, or N/A. Just know what you want to do as far as goals. Most builders get impatient with indecisiveness. He's a super nice guy. If he doesn't answer his phone, be sure to leave a message. Now a days, if he doesn't answer, he's doing something maticulous etc.

Not to get off the path but you guys mentioned JDM is moving to Texas? Is this true and if so do you know when? They never even hinted to me they were moving when I talked to them. Will they will be totally out of Jersey? Sorry to ramble on but you really caught me off guard here.

Actually, Al has fully retired from the fire department and is full time building motors! It used to be difficult to get him on the phone but since he retired, I've reached him every time I've called.
Isn't JDM moving to Texas anyways. It's not necessarily a bad thing. I'd, personally, be concerned with someone doing a lot of work and then they move. Now your back to square one and looking for a shop to do work on a car they have no knowledge of. I'm not trying to dirt JDM. Just something to consider in a project!
I don't want to speak for JDM or say anything that I may have been told in private but the one thing that Jim Jr. told me is that they will not be closing down the present shop.

I know there are some JDM fans out there, but there are a lot of people with horror stories too so I would stear clear of them. Compared to a company like boss330 where you will be hard pressed to find anything negative about them, why take a chance with a company that has over a dozen serious complaints against them and their quality. I would never risk the chance of being one of the many 'unhappy' customers IMO.
I have the top of the line livernois heads as well and would recommend Mike Schropp in a second. JDM sent me heads with virtually no guides in them and it cost me an expensive built motor so I am one of the 'unhappy customers' and wouldn't recommend them.
As far as the stroker kits, I now have a 298 and like it. I used to have a 302 and one of the big downfalls is the need to turn off the knock sensors with that big of a stroke. It is very dangerous not having the knock sensors to shut things down if detonation starts happening. Adam at ST configured my new pistons with the 298 so now I have the knock sensors to go along with the extra cubes and am very happy with it. I personally would not recommend going over a 298 stroke primarily for that reason.
If you want the lowest down time Bird, then I would suggest build the motor completely independant of your stocker. Don't use anything off your stocker, not heads, cams, nothing. This will allow you to keep your car and not worry at all how long the build takes and if (god forbid) you ever do have a problem, you can always throw your stocker motor back in there and have your car while any repairs are being done. Once you've had the new motor for awhile and it's solid, you can always sell the stocker and recoup some savings. It's honestly not THAT much more expensive to do it this way and you will have the peice of mind of knowing you will never be without a car for any length of time and this makes it worth the small extra cost IMO. Builds (even crate motors) always seem to have unsuspected surprises so there is no garuntee how long your car will be down unless you do it this way.
Just my thoughts...
Mark
