2005 Mustang GT Alternator Update... (and a 200A surprise)
Last weekend, my alternator took a dump on the way home from the track. So, on Tuesday, I had my wife call some Ford dealers. No one had one in stock, but one could have it on Wed morning. So, on Wed, she went to the Ford dealer hoping to get a warranty swap (using the naive blond card.. hehe). Anyway, they said they would need the car, and the blower was a deal killer. So, she bought the new alternator. What a rape... $470!
But, then one of the guys at the dealer told her about a place nearby that might be able to rebuild it. She went there and found out the guy could rebuild it for a lot less. I talked to him on the phone, and decided to let him do it. Donna took the other one back to Ford for a refund.
We picked up the rebuilt alternator this afternoon, and it looks great. Everything is basically new, including the case and a new 8-rib pulley. Out the door price was $270. And everything is working great!
Also, the guy had given my wife some paperwork showing a 200A alternator that would work on our cars. It would need a different regulator connector, and needs to be re-clocked 1/3 turn, but this guy said it would be a simple change. I don't know the exact price for the 200A alternator... all he told her was that it was "expensive". But, if you absolutey need/want a 200A alternator, it seems like you have an option. Check out the attached pdf files.

MikeVistablue06 had his alternator lock up and he ended up going with an aftermarket equivellant for considerably less than the factory one. I don't remember exactly what it was but it was a good replacement. I will email him for details.

Some people are like Slinkies. They're really good for nothing. But they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs.

He said on another board he got his wholesale, for about $100 under retail.

This is the second one that went bad on me. I was N/A on the first. It's not a belt issue. There are lot of guys dealing with these weak alternators. If someone gets a P0340 or P0344 "cam position sensor" code, it is most likely a bad alternator. There is a TSB out on them.

I was looking up an alt for a friend on his 2000 dodge intrepid last week ($189!!) at Advance auto, so just for kicks I checked mine on the Stang. $219 for a lifetime warranty rebuilt model. Less than I would figure.

Are you sure that was for a 2005+ Mustang? I've read in the past couple days where the alternators for the 2V engines look the same, and physically fit, but don't work.

Hmmm...no. That was what came up on their online listing based on my car, but we all know how reliable their parts recco's can be....
hopefully, I won't have to find out!!

I'm still waiting for the aftermarket to come out with a better alternator as the one ford put in there is weak at best.

Don, what you got was a new after market Alt. The Industry suppliers sell them, and in general they are just as good or better than OEM. You didn't say what was wrong with your old one reg, rectifier etc, but a 'rebuild' would've cost a lot less.
I didn't get an itemized list, nor did he tell me all the details... so I'm not sure. But, he did tell me initially he was going to rebuild it, and I know it was delayed one day because he was waiting on a regulator to arrive. That also led me to believe it was being rebuilt. Maybe it just needed a different regulator. I just don't know for sure.
Bottom line, I saved a couple hundred bucks and even more important, I'm not getting the P0340, etc. codes anymore!
