I was the very first person to purchase C&L's new No Tune Insert Tube. This should be a great way to be able to use a C&L intake if you do not want to retune or need to wait before forking out the money for a tuner and tune. I recently got a good deal on a C&L intake but don't have the $400 available for a tuner and tune. The C&L person that took my call said he has been driving their R&D car for over a month with the No Tune Insert and did not have any problems.
The cost is $32 plus shipping. They only have a handful available now.
There is a page on the C&L website that tells all about the insert.
I will be installing this weekend. I am anxious to see if I can tell anything different compared to the K&N that I currently have.

I just don't understand why anyone would want to not re-tune, stock tune is horrible. To each his own I guess.

Do you have the full K&N or just the drop in? Without a tune the full one should be about the same as I'm guessing both companies max out the stock computer? But well see what your seat of pants say... keep us posted!!
Me too would get the tuner first and CAI 2nd but to all his/her own...!!

I have the full K&N.
I'm not trying to argue no tune vs tune. As I said, I got a good deal on the C&L, So the CAI came first. And for now the money is not available for a tuner and tune. C&L feels there is enough market for their intake to be used without a retune to have developed this product. For me it is great because I can at least put the C&L on my car now and not look at it sitting on the workbench until I can put the $400 into a tuner and tune.

Oh I agree it is a good gadget for ppl not wanting or wanna wait to tune!!
As I said to all his/her own!! We all have different agendas and economies...
Okay. I just didn't want this thread to go where I didn't intend it to. Believe me I would love to to throw a tune on it with everything I have read about them on this forum - and 4:10 gears and LT headers and everything else that helps calm "The Addiction".
I will report in on my thoughts about the insert. I really don't expect much. Maybe a better sound. I don't like the way the K&N sounds at times. Almost like a gargle is the only way I know how to describe it.

I don’t understand what is the purpose of a CAI with out retuning. It will run just a little leaner. It’s not like anyone could tell the difference, right? Maybe it sounds different but that’s the only thing I can think of.
If you add more air and not more fuel that = slightly lean and no extra power. I guess I just don’t understand why you would do that without a tune.

It adds about 15 RWHP, sounds and looks better... plus as above he's doing it part by part and is now on the way... kida like layaway.. lol

That was a luckey call to C&L, your timing was perfact. Good luck with the R&D. Keep us up on what's going on. I take it that it's a insert to bring the airflow down to close to stock. Then when you load the tune you remove it. Are you alowed to take a pic of the insert?
It will be interesting to hear the difference between with the insert and with the tune.
Good luck

The computer adds fuel depending on a signal from the MAF. The MAF of course tell the computer there is more air going by after a CAI is installed.
The computer however have limits on how much air to add and pegs out at X amount. Thats why he needs the restrictor in the intake to keep the air flow at max what the stock computer can handle. Other wise IT WOULD run lean.
These engines are VERY receptable to air flow and converts it to power in a hurry. CAI, long tube headers, and a tune will give close to 50 RWHP! Try that on a PYM 2 or 4 valve!!

There's a picture of the insert on the C&L website. It's just a tube with a slot for the MAF. And yes you remove it if you do a tune. The C&L "No Tune" actually flows less air than other "No Tunes" because C&L found that there is a loss of power at WOT if you Air/Fuel ratio gets too high. The C&L No Tune has a 13:1- 13:2 Air/Fuel ratio at WOT. I'm really not real knowledgeable about all this stuff but it seems to me there is virtually no being lean situation with the C&L. Please correct me if that is a bad statement.
There are several graphs on the C&L website from the testing they did.

The MAF has to be calibrated... since the C&L is larger, it can flow more CFM of air through it at the same velocity. So, if you use it and the stock tune, it reads the signal form the MAF and converts it to be XXX CFM based on the stock MAF diameter, but its actually Flowing YYY CFM and that entering the engine... running lean, but the 02 sensor picks up on it and the computer will add fuel until it gets too far out of its parameters and then the comptuer will toss a CEL for MAF Voltage.
I ran my C&L with out a re-tune for about 2 days to see what woudl happen... monitoring it with the lap top and the above is exactly what happened. I did not however run at WOT, because that runs on set parameters and would have been too lean.

That's why this thing have a restriction built in. To decrease the volume to where no calibration / tune is needed. That's the whole idea... Kyle you didn't read the whol thing did you?
