Default Gear whine - Does it have to happen?

Now that the FR 410's are fully broken in, I still have a whine at lower speeds. It isn't bad, but it can be heard if no stereo is on. Most seem to say this is normal, but why? Why don't factory installed gears make a whine? Why can't Ford Racing gears be put in so that there is no gear whine? Do some of you out there have 373's or 410's installed that make no whine? If so what is done differently during the install to make this happen?

Nope, doesn't have to happen at all. I have FRPP 4.10s and have absolutely no whine at any speed.

Are you only hearing this during low speeds while turning? If so, that could be the clutch packs. Mine did that after the gear install, and even though the Amsoil said it didn't need friction modifier... 4oz of it did away with the whine from them.

Sounds like you got a less than optimum backlash setting... could be too tight or too loose. Both cause whine.

No whine in any of the cars I have had done. That's why I was always amazed when people bough tused gears..pre worn. That's crazy. If the noise bothers you, bring itback and tell them, maybe they just need the back lash adjusted or a shim...nothing major.

Take it back. Sounds like pinion depth or backlash is wrong. Trust me... Nothing more annoying than living with a bad gear install.

Whine is almost always caused by incorrect installation. Ask if a pinin depth gauge was used. If not, if they did it by'eye' or by 'pattern' then it is just a guess. You eye cannot gauge the depth of the pinion to the thousandth of an inch which is required for silent operation.

Thanks for the opinions, I figured there is no reason to have noise it if it done right.
The guy that did the work says the whine is normal. I called a performance shop that has been in Phoenix forever (Lopers) and asked their opinion. I was told on 373's and up a bit of whine is normal, that these ratios make more noise than stock, however he said it shouldn't be much noise. He mentioned that it may need a backlash adjustment. I know the first guy should take care of it for free, but I don't even want him touching the car, I want a fresh look at this. It is worth the money to me to have a second opinion / inspection by another party anyway.

Sure... Just don't let it go. Once you have a wear pattern, there's no recovery.

I thought once gears are broken in it's too late to adjust something like whine. I had one set (4.10) whine from the get go and trashed them. The installer tried to pass off used gears or a substandard set I believe. I had old 4 speeds as a kid that whined, but we thought it was a cool thing then. Could be wine tonight … not by FRPP, but by Bolla!

That's usually the case. Depends on how severe the wear pattern.

You could do what I did, I threw in a big old tremec tranny. That thing makes so much noise you would never hear the rear gears. lol

Ok, guys, update. I finally (stupid me) was able to determine who the real pros are in this town. ALL MUSTANG PERFORMANCE (AMP). Just check out their website and it is obvious these guys are serious about mustangs.

Performance parts and accessories for late model mustangs, including new and recycled parts. (Why oh why didn't I go there?).

Anyway, I talked to Mike over there and he said my gears are now scrap. He told me that once set up and run for 600 miles with a wine, they are junk, and need to be thrown away and replaced by someone who know's what they are doing. No way to save them, the pattern is there. I also learned there are two types of Ford Racing gears, and he asked which I had. Didn't know. Never knew there were two types. I will now be out around $600 for the previous gear install (won't let that idiot touch my car again). He said properly installed gears do not make noise. Period. If someone tells you they do, they are in denial. He said that setting up gears takes expertise, and the right tools, and most mechanics do not have the skills / tools to do it right, so people live in denial and pretend it is acceptable. Gulp...I'm screwed.

Word to the wise. Spend some time doing the best research you can on the person who will do your work. I was stupid and did not do my research well enough. I took the suggestion of a mustang club website here in AZ and will now pay dearly for it.

Well, we all live and learn. I wish I had back some of the $$ I've wasted along the way. Hope they get you fixed up right.

Sounds like he is charging quite a bit of money. I can get Ford gears sets, fluids, speedo with install for $390. That is at MustangMagic.com in New York..they are one of the best. Maybe you should ask why he is charging you so much more..even provide him the link. $600 is a lotof money no?? What do other think??

Yeah, that is high. $450 P&L seems to be about the average.
