Default 2006 Mustang GT Pros/Cons Of Going Open Headers?

Hello Peeps! I was just wondering if it would be possible to go Open Headers for my 06 Mustang GT. I mainly doing it because i want my car to sound like the following car: .

Are there any drawbacks with going open headers? Are there any performance gains? In your opinion should i do it?

COPS!!!! and TICKETS!!! Have you ever heard a car on the street with open headers..........man they sound sooooo good and they are soooooooooooooo loud. you can hear nothing in the car thats under
99 db level. but it is a sweet sound, especially when you get down on it and go to like 4000 RPM........it makes wood........lol

Ahh... disapointed... when I think of open headers I think of pipes out the side... that is still somewhat muffled from traveling all the way back...

I for one do not think that's too loud but the coppers may and then you're in deep dodo with Cali emissions and EPA (dB) law PLUS a federal court hearing on removing the cats... am thinking around a V6 sticker cost in fines and court fees...??

To me and the era I am from Open headers means just that, nothing connected to the collector......lots and lots of exhaust goo all over the bottom of your car if you run it very long that way

haha... hey, that's my car and video!! I guess someone posted it on YouTube (not me). I shot that video on Jan 1, 2006, the day after I installed the LTs. That was extremely loud. Way too loud for everyday driving. I have the cutouts now, so I can get very close to that sound with the flick of a switch.

Do you want to see the original hi resolution version? This is a large file, so right click-save as, or give it plenty of time to load. And crank of the volume for the full effect.: Open Headers (50MB file)

Yea Don, thought I recognized you... how many hours of video do you shoot of the car in a year...?? LOL

FA,
Open headers to me mean that you have the header (tubes) of each cylinder to one or two LARGE diameter pipes and out on the side, pretty much right where you step in and out. In this instance they refer to long tube headers and straight (I'm guessing) 2.5" diameter pipes all the way out to where it widens to the 4"(?) LoudMouth pipes. No cats, no mufflers just open pipes...

When you get headers you'll probably (like most of us) get long tubes, off-road (no cathalytic cleaning) and some quite open mufflers. Straight pipes like above is crazy loud!!

I think Don was NA during that so not much more than an intake and the exhaust system.

Cut outs are ports, or small doors if you will, in the exhaust before any muffling that can be opened for the 'sound effect' of open headers. Many have them electronically actuated from inside the car so they can open them in a few sec's whenever they want... probably not around the coppers!!

+1 to tickets. I know someone who has an Shelby AC Cobra, and when they gun it by some nice parked cars, they set of car alarms. Yikes.

One interesting thing to consider. On "MuscleCar" on Spike, they showed an exhaust install that was basically a Y from the headers that was for a sleeper. On one side was the standard exhaust system (H/X Pipe, Mufflers, Tailpipes), on the other was an electronic butterfly valve that could be opened and closed via a switch. You can rip it up with an open exhaust, and then shut the butterfly if there is an issue, and vice versa (i.e. good for a sleeper in a street fight...go from highly restricted to flat out nasty with a flick of a switch). Coolest thing ever...IMHO.

Running open headers probably won't damage the engine in warm climates. In cold climates its a no-no. Keep in mind that the heat generated in will be really high, and you also have to consider possible damage to cables, wiring harnesses, or fuel lines. Not to mention it's illegal, and you live in California. If you're interested in the occassional sound burst, get cutouts.

C5D... those are cutouts. Below are pics of my cutouts, and the switch on the dash. I can go from mellow to hellacious in 2 seconds. FYI... All of my drag racing videos are with the cutouts open.

Well then you have the coolest thing ever . I'm not a drag racer, but I would love to get some of those at some point in the future...just cause it's so damn cool.

I can see it now...getting pulled over for disturbing the peace and saying, "But Officer, It wasn't me...I have mufflers and everything! I have no idea who could have been setting off all of those car alarms."
