Should i be able to get out of gear without pressing the clutch in?
Hi everybody! I was driving my 06 mustang gt this morning and i accidentally found out that i can move from gear to neutral without pressing the clutch in.... Is this normal. In all other manual cars i have driven, i had to press the clutch in to get the car our of a gear. THANKS....

SIMPLE AS CAN BE
That's normal. If you time the rpms exactly right where you are at a no-load state on the drivetrain you can take it out of gear. If you're really careful, you can put it into gear the same way, but it's much harder.
It shouldn't hurt anything if you don't grind the gears, but I'd still refrain from doing it too often, just to be safe

No you dont need the clutch to get it out of gear. Yea Peter one of my friends thought the same thing and did that with his mazda for a month, i dont know what the motor has to do with it but he ended up with a new motor(warrentied) and paying a grand for a trans. too bad he didn't ask me about it first i could have told him to tell them he useed the clutch and the synq's went.

I thought all manual tranny's would let ya take it outa gear without the clutch...saying its no load on the gears?

That is right. You don't need the clutch with no load on the gears. I drove a tractor trailer part time years ago and I only used the clutch for first gear and the just shift the other 12 with no load. If you no what your doing you can even do it with a synco. trans. but not recommended.

no load - if you're accelerating real hard, go ahead and try to pull it out of gear....it ain't so easy! Also makes lots of bad noises.

Haha! I was driving in a parking lot a couple months ago and swore I took the car out of 1st without using the clutch. Girlfriend couldn't fathom why I had a look of intense surprise/fear on my face! I thought you needed the clutch to engage/disengage the gears all the time...
I have been using that trick since I started driving a stick. Learned it from my dad. I have taught three sons the same thing. I don't use it upshifting so much but I have done it. Never have had any adverse problems from it. It comes in handy with a bum left knee occassionally.

+1 learned that trick from my grandfather.... used to do it all the time on my old 5.0LX that I drove daily.... dont drive the s197 enough to know where the spots are to shift..... def taking out of gear w/o clutch all the time....
