Vacuum Leak? I went outside a little while ago and opened and tightened the gas cap, and I am hoping that was the problem. I will find out tomorrow if that was the problem. If it was the gas cap, how long do you think it will take for the CEL to go away?

It may clear on its own after a few driving cycles. If not, you can always go to autozone and they can read/clear the code.
I have one of those handheld scanners, so I can erase the code myself but I was afraid I may erase it and it could be something more serious than the gas cap. I will probably wait and see if it clears. Thanks for the prompt answers.
What about the vacuum leak? What is that about? I am not to mechanical.

I agree with stlwagon, that's probably a gas cap thing. The EVAP system is for capturing/recycling fuel vapors. You can see it if you look under the back of the car, right below the trunk/gas tank, there is a black plastic cover with some hoses and other stuff including a canister. Hoses run from the canister to the engine bay and on the driver side toward the firewall is the EVAP purge valve. It's a black plastic thing. It's nothing you need to mess with, just pointing it out as another component.

it's going to be your fuel pump. oversized orifice on the fuel pump is causing to loose tank pressure. i just fixed one yesterday by replacing the fuel pump. please dont go to autozone those guys try to put ideas in your head and they make you more confused then you'll be suspicious about the guys that really know what they are doing. most likely when you get an evap code it's usually never a gas cap. most times it's the evap canister purge valve. evap managent valve, hose or line that leaks, and very now and then the vap canister itself.
I have only 11K on my 05 GT and it just clicked on the engine light last week. It went off after 3 driving cycles, just like the manual said, then it came on again on yesterday (monday 5/7/07). So, I'm gonna see if it goes out again. But, in the meantime, is the fuel pump easy to inspect myself?

Since Mon (5-7-07) the Check Engine Light went out. Driving was fine and no probs. Then on Thur, during normal driving around town, the Check Engine Light started Flashing and engine started running badly. I stopped at my appointment, and the check engine light was not flashing the next time I started it up. It has run fine since then. This is the third episode of flashing engine light and second of solid on Check Engine Light.

hello,
i have had this exact same problem. i am embarrassed to admit it but my check engine light has been on and off since 2005 due to this small evap leak code. It wasn't until a few months ago that they finally confirmed that it is a leak coming from the actual canister like mentioned above. They quoted me almost $400 bucks to fix it. What I would like to know is... How serious is it? I mean it's been occurring all these years and hasn't yet affected the car, at least that I can tell. Please help!
