Time for oil change. What oil should i really use on 2007 Mustang GT
It is time for my first oil change and would like to know what oil i should use in my car. As you all are aware there are different opinions on what kind of oil to use(synthetic or regular). I went to walmart and they carry both the motorcraft blend 5w20 and mobil1 extended performance 5w20. I have been told that the 2005 up mustangs have a tight tolerance and because of the variable valve timing that mobil1 may be too slick for the engine and the oil may mess with the timing a little. They are saying the you should use the motorcraft synthetic blend because it is designed for the engine and will have no promblems using that oil. My question is who all out there are using motorcraft and mobil1 and what oil would be best for my car. I do not drag race the car or run it hard. My car will be used for shows and the occasional street race while cruising around town. My car will hardly ever see highway driving, just cruising around town from stoplight to stoplight.
I would go with royal purple 5w20 but I have heard back and fourth about timing issues by not using the ford stuff. The 3 valve motor is it's own animal.
Hi, you are sure right about this subject and the wildly different oppinions on the BEST OIL. And man some guys get real "opinionated" lets say.
Here is my take on it. I have an 07 GT also. mine is 7 months old, and has allmost 13.000 miles on it. I took Fords first free oil change at 1000 miles. Since then every 3.000 miles I take it to the dealer and have them change it with Motorcraft 5w20 that comes in the car from Ford.
In my whole life, I never had my oil changed allways did it my self. The reasons you mentioned about close bearing tolerances etc, is exactly correct. But since Ford can change my oil for $18.95, and never make me wait more than 30 minutes, I do that.
You allready priced Motorcraft oil, so you know that you cant do it cheaper really your self, and its a highly overrated experience any way.
Plus you have the old dirty oil to contend with.
Its does no harm, believe me, to have a regular 3.000 mile oil change record with Ford. Should you one day have an issue with the car, you have a record with Ford that at least shows you care for the car and hold up your end. Its just my oppinion, I hope it helps.
Naturally, no end of posts will follow saying how wrong I am and how "other worldly" Mobil 1 and all the synthetics are. There awsome lubricants, and vital in a race engine in my oppinion, just not the best for our 07 Mustang GT
I also do the dealer oil change for the very same reason. And this time I went with Mobil One. The dealer said it was up to me, Ford or Mobil One. And it will not do anything to the warranty, it said Mobil One on the invoice. Time will tell.

Makes me feel like a kid every time.
I'd recommend Motorcraft 5w20 also and use their FL820S filter. That being said (or typed) my last oil change consisted of Amsoil 0w20 and their Eao filter. A couple things I noticed after running this grade of oil is that the car runs better when its cold and overall gas mileage has improved. I don't feel any loss or gain in power once the engine has reached operating temperatures.
I have always stuck with the manufacturer's recommended oil...in this case I am using the 5w-20 Motorcraft Syn Blend (as I did in my '02)...I've never had any problems with it. (My Vette came factory filled with Mobil 1 fully synthetic 5w-30 and so that's what I use)...I also change the oil in all of my cars...I trust no one with that (I've had overfills/underfills...overtightening/undertightening of plugs and filters a long, long time again...remember...it's not their car).

I had said above that I have so far had my dealer change the oil, and thats true. But I feel you have a good point in that no one is going to do it with the kind of attention and care I would giving it.
The dealer did tell me that it was fine to change my own oil, just to keep a record of the changes. I havent had any problems "so far" but I am going to think hard on this, and indeed may start doing it my self.
i 100% would go with what warlock and mick had to say. any warranty issues and it will be at no cost to you. also there is less hassle when trying to warranty anything onthat car because your considered a good customer. i see alot of customer come in pissed because their engine shot to hell cause they are using different weight oil other that 5w-20, just because some one that thinks they know everything recommended something else that they used in the 1970's. the timing issues are that cam phasers get stuck and make noise and also the lash adjusters get stuck and also make knocking noises like if it was a diesel engine. so definetly 5w-20
O.k. Thanks to all who responded on this issue. It looks like i have made my mind up. I will use motorcraft 5w20 synthetic blend with the motorcraft oil filter.
I went with the motorcraft for the first 2 changes till I got her up to 9,000km
I then switched to Mobil 1 5W20 and I have had 0 problems.
My car is S/C'd and is run hard at the track every chance I get.
Since the S/C is on there any repairs are on my dime yet I don't anticipate any problems.
