Default One last question before the Gear purchase

I know that 4:10's will work great for the 5 speed. However I am concerned that it might be a little much with the automatic.........thoughts please, or if anyone is running 4:10's in their automatic, how is that working for you. I ocasionally make the 200 mile run back and forth dallas to shreveport and back, 200 each way.

Well, remember your Auto is a 5-speed as well. I say don' fear the gear. I have never heard anyoen say they wish they had a higher gear... heard plenty of people wish they went the next step lower though.

I have the 4.10 with a 5-speed manula and still get 24+mpg on the highway doing 75.

I think Mick Mach is running 410s with an auto, have not heard any complaints about the gears from him. His problem was the tune, key word is was.

if u go highway man go 3.73's ^_^ i got them in mine (auto) adn couldnt be happier. i hit 75 at 2000 rpms, which is pretty lower than the 410's. I always considered 4.10's for city and stayin in town, but for a travel car, go 3.73s. I live in suburbs of Houston, so i went 3.73's.

If I don't go to Shreveport I seldom drive anymore than 20-30 miles, I live about 6 miles from work (lewisville tx) and that is literally straight down the interstate, but seldom go that way in the mornings or afternoons. Traffic on 35E is stupid, I generally skirt 35 by going via a nice flowing 4 lane through sub divisions.

I get the chance to dance with other cars more often these days than when I first got my car in Dec.

I believe it is going to be 4:10's. Have a neighbor with a '00 Z28 that is in serious need of a good spanking.........lol. and I think the gear will give me the edge. I sure hope I don't lose much off of my 160+ top end....lol. I have been to 135 two times and that was plenty for me and there was still plenty of pedal, I don't know how fast these cars go, but it's a hell of a lot faster than 135

Thanks guys

I've had 4.10s for 23,000 miles, and at all sort of different power levels. I'm still 100% convinced they are the perfect gear. At 70mph, I'm at 2450rpm. Even at 80mph, it's only 2800rpm. With 3.73s, those numbers would be: 70mph = 2250rpm, 80mph = 2550rpm.

Oh, and at the track, they are awesome. My best 60-foot time so far is 1.54.

I think I turn around 22k - 23k @ 80 now, maybe a little less. So basically at crusing speed you run at about 500 rpm higher. I can definitely deal with that. now I can sock some of my saved coins away and still have enough to do the gear change. I was calling around yesterday getting quotes for parts and labor and just labor. One place quoted me $895, I told him "buddy I was born in the morning, but not this morning". I also told him that there is a shop 3 blocks away that $300 cheaper. He said I should take it there, I told him there are shops that will do it for even less than that.

THere is a driveshaft and diferrential shop in FOrt Worth that I think I am going to have the work done at. Its $450 drive out the door. THe name of the shop Is Drive Shafts and Differentials, I fell pretty comfortable with them doing the work.............I mean look at the name of the place. I have also asked around and they have a good rep.

Thanks everyone for your input and help. I will post after I get them in . I know what the result is going to be and I can't wait. IF we weren't so busy at work I would take a day off and go and have it done................

LOL... I'm not trying to "convert" anyone. I may have to drop down to 3.90s or 3.73s someday myself... if I get into a situation where I run out of gear before the end of the 1/4-mi. haha. Heck, if I all I did was race this thing on the 1/8 and didn't use it as my daily driver, I'd have 4.88s in there!!

Terry, you gonna get them done up at HPP? Thats who did mine and they are great. I make drives over to the Dallas Ft Worth area all the time. I also live in Mineral Wells if you know where that is.

I drive my car everyday, and these 4.10's are soooooo freaking fun. They are very nice in everyday traffic where I live, like cruising around town, going to school, etc. In the DFW area....they are just as nice. I have NOOO problems what so ever in bumper to bumper traffic, and they are also nice on the highway as well.

Not gonna lie though, Don W is one of the guys who inspired me to go all out with the 4.10's for my auto. I'm certainly glad I went with em...let me know if you need anything man.

Didn't see you already had a place in mind. You should honestly check out HPP Racing, it's in Lewisville man. They are amazing there and do all my work for my car. My install on my gears went great!!!

I have a last question before I get mine done too ! How many people that have had their gears changed went with a new stud girdle rear end cover too ? Is it necessary ? Just need to know how much more I might need to spend on it !

I went with an LPW girdle to replace the tinfoil stocker. I believe it was $160.
