2005 Mustang GT, Failed First Vehicle Inspection In Texas?
I took my 2005 GT Mustang in for its first state mandated vehicle inspection. The only engine modification is a Demolet CAI and a 93 octane performance tune. The tech hooks up to the data port, runs the program, is just about to apply a new inspection sticker to the windshield when suddenly he puts the sticker back in the drawer and looks over at me and says, "no good, you failed."
The printout indicated that the emissions portion of the test was failed due to several monitors set to a "not ready" condition. The monitors identifed were the O2 sensor, O2 sensor/htr and and the Catalyst. The tech was "confused" why the car failed because the check engine light was not on. I tried to explain the car had a custom tune but he only looked more confused.
Has anybody who is required a yearly vehicle inspection had this experience?
I guess I will have to reinstall the factory air cleaner and reflash the factory settings in order to pass the emissions inspection.
Things have really changed, they don't even open the hood anymore.

Sounds like you had a P1000 code. The vehicle needs to be driven for several miles so the PCM can test the emissions components during real-time conditions. If everything is ok the PCM will clear the P1000 code. Some of the things that will set P1000 - clearing the codes, reprogramming the PCM, clearing the KAM memory or disconnecting the battery.
Most of these tunes have the rear O2 sensors turned off. Wonder if that could have done it. Either way, put the stock box and tune back on, get it inspected and then reinstall the CAI.
This is interesting news for me since I'll eventually end up in Texas. Is this a new state wide emmissions law? I'll end up in San Antonio if I go back there. Unfortunately it won't be as easy for me to return to stock as I'd have to reinstall the charge motion plates as well. Doable though...

yup... reset your computer and they make you drive 150 miles with a bad inspection sticker. What fun it is getting pulled over multiple times during that 150 mile trip.
oh well. i rather have stricter emission testing than a bunch of polluting POS cars driving on the texas roads.

I would ask the guy how much it would cost to buy a good sticker.
Wink wink. A "buy your wife something nice" kinda sticker.
i was a state inspector in san antonio and they didn't check for tail pipe emissions. i think only houston and dallas/forthworth are the only emission counties in texas right now. i thought that they did put a sensor in the tail pipe, did that change?

No, they only do an OBD-II check and gas cap check in the Metroplex counties, Houston area, and now Travis/Williamson counties (Austin).
Sounds to me like whoever did your tune jacked you and turned off the O2 sensors. You need to contact them and discuss it. There is no reason your car shouldn't pass the OBD II scan.
And Mike, you're wrong. I had mine inspected last month. Not only did they do the OBD II scan, they also did the sniffer test, and it was on rollers! So it was at several different speeds, both under load and cruise, and in different gears. Damn inspection took over an hour.
Considering what all I have done to my car, needless to say the longer they had it in the inspection station, the more worried I was. But it passed without a hitch! Who says you can't have 500rwhp with one of these cars and not pass Texas inspection

Some people are like Slinkies. They're really good for nothing. But they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs.

Did you ask them if they could tell how much power you were putting down

+1... And there is certainly no reason to turn off the rear O2s with just a CAI and tune.

I also have the TI CAI xcal2, how do you know if the O2s rear is turned off. What the the O2s do?
Glad we do not have that inspection in FL.
When I was in Ct they had/have it and what a pain it was. hey used the exhaust probe, and after sitting in line for 60 minutes, cars would idel and then fail. Even depended what bay you went to.
MachOne- did you wait in line for a long time idling that could have made you fail?

If you have the XCAL 2, you can datalog to test for O2 sensors. I'm not sure if you get an error message or just no data if they are turned off. Either way you should be able to tell. You can also read codes if the CEL has been on (even if it has since turned off). Don't forget to clear any codes that are shown. You also have to drive so many miles at different speeds to allow OBD 2 "all tests passed" after clearing codes or re-connecting battery. I'm not sure of exact miles but I think only 50 or so.
