update: i was part of the eternal thread on the 'other' forum. i had the new strut mounts installed. it worked. . . for a while. something is lose again up there.
fyi: for those of you with Steeda HD strut mounts, they include the SAME part that causes the chuckle so you're kinda screwed there. .. well so am i cause i have a set just sitting around now and they're basically 'defective'.
the car's for sale anyways. i can't stand to drive the damn thing any more. too many squeaks, bumps, noises, etc. don't get me wrong, it's a great car in so many other ways, but i can't handle a clunker. my sn95 makes some noises, too, but it has 160,000 miles on it so it has an excuse.
Sorry to hear you're letting it go but can't blame you.
Hey guys,
I just wanna say this was probably the most informative thread ive read on this issue. My dad has an 05 Roush that he babies more than his own kids and he only has 5k miles on it. The car has had the front end clunking noise, when turning, since he bought it, yet failed to tell me until today. So i printed out that tsb and i'm going to take the car into the dealership to hopefully get this resolved. Thanks
Hmm... "clunking" doesn't exactly sound like what that TSB is describing. It claims it's a "body resonance" issue. My "clunking" doesn't sound like anything vibrating... it's a pretty solid sound. From what a lot of other people are saying here, it sounds like many of us have a more solid clunk.
I'm not doubting that new strut mounts fix the problem... that's pretty much what my other mechanic suspected was the culprit anyway. I think in this case the TSB may be covering one thing and fixing a less documented problem in the process (like faulty stock mounts).
But anyway... so how do I get the dealership to chaange this out under waranty on my '08 GT (built in Nov '07)? I've taken it in twice for the same symptom, and the mechanics have agreed they hear it both times, but then they can't reproduce after I leave (so they don't work on it). Mine's not so prevalent as some, apparently... it only does it at low speeds when turning hard left. Any suggestions?
I had the same problem with my 06GT. The dealer kept the car for two days, listened with their "chassis ears" (driven by two different individuals), and was returned to me at the end of the second day "with no apparent clunks". I then printed out TSB 7-18-2, took it to the dealer and practically had to beg them to do the work under warranty, which they did. NO MORE "CLUNK"
Many people have had this problem on 05, 06, and 07s. The solution is a newly redesigned strut bearing (bracket as they call it) that was released in late June.
Part number is: 8R3Z-18183-B
All 08's have the new part with the start of production in July.
If this is the case, that means some '08 models came with the bad part (mine being one of them). Why doesn't the TSB mention any '08 models? I'll bet money the dealership won't help me because of this.
Bought my 07 used and noticed this. Dealer replaced both control arms and ball joints; still clunked then I printed out the TSB and took it in said its clunking like all hell .... they ordered the part no hassle and just got it installed today .........
DAMN the car handles better and it sounds like a front suspension should sound over bumps now no more CLUNK CLUNK all fixed under warranty.

What did they replace, the vertical links or the strut mounts?
I had the same clunk, printed out the bulletin, and went to the dealership. I described the sound, and they started dancing around the problem, said if something wasn't "broken" they weren't going to waste time looking, then I gave them the printout, they got quiet, took my keys and said we'll call you later! All fixed!
I don't understand the attitude of these dealers. Its like it to much trouble to fix cars. Its not like they don't get paid for warranty work. TSBs are the first thing they should look at and then go from there. If I was a Ford district rep I would have a few words for the dealers.

That's the exact reaction I got last week. Except they didn't much care about the TSB, since as of yet there's no proof that that's my problem. They told me it was "too intermittent" for them to find (despite my ability to demonstrate on each visit), and they wanted me to wait until my warranty was nearly up and come back, in hopes that it had gotten worse (thus easier to find). They didn't give all my research more than a passing glance. I still need to write Ford corporate about it.
