Default 2005 Mustang GT. Metal pieces bolted to axle. What are they for??

So I'm putting on my LCA relocation brackets the other night and I come across this hunk of metal that is bolted to the axle. Never even really noticed it until then. Anyway, this thing is preventing me from installing the passenger side bracket. Naturally, after close inspection, I remove it and keep moving. Hasn't affected anything, but after looking at the pics of stl's axle-brace, I noticed that this part doesn't exist on their project car. WTF? It's on both sides of my axle as well. If I wanted the brace, (which I do), I would have to remove this piece.

I'm not losing any sleep over this, just curious to see if anyone has any input as to why some stangs have this and some obviously don't.

Thanks.

PS: I know, I know, the drawings are too cool for school. You don't have to tell me.

Where is it bolted?? My guess is it's there to balance the axle. I don't recall seeing it on mine.

Edit: disregard first question. I see the picture.

It's fairly heavy (>10lbs). Would it be safe to say that the axle would still be balanced if I took both sides off? I couldn't find what it was in the diagrams that I have, so that just makes it more difficult to figure it out.

Eh, that's good enough for me. Now all I have to do is get the brace. I just spent $1K on a laptop, so I'm in the spending mood, lol.

I feel like I just got a new game or something. I have always wondered where everyone got all those smilies from. I just never gave any consideration to really just asking. Thanks.

And for the record, I would change my avatar to if my axle fell off.

Why would I do that? The price of a new axle and whatever else would break would most certainly cover the cost of new cams and their install.

But then again, the likelyhood of that happening is slim to none, even with that part missing. I just can't see it. It's not like it's made of cardboard or something.

It's kinda late over there. You on leave or something? I mean, no one would ever question the Col. if he was late for work. No one is that stupid, right?

I'm actually at work until 0600. Working nights all week.

Oh, you sly devil...

I'm supposed to be working nights this week as well, but the testing range is having problems, so they keep delaying us and it's going to run into other events and start causing problems. So now I have to go in in the morning, but come back at midnight, work all night, then start another test in the morning until 1500. To top it all off, I already slept to be wired for tonight and found out about an hour ago that it got cancelled. Needless to say, !!!!

I guess it's ok if it means that the West Coast doesn't get evaporated by the bad guys.

Those are vibration dampners. Ford has a tendency to put them on a lot of different cars. If you take them off and don't feel any vibs then your ok.

Sweet. Funny how you don't even notice things until they are in your way.
