Default Mechanic Modification Charges: What is a good price?

Hey everyone,
It seems like most people on this forum do most of the mechanical work themselves on their mustangs but I am not quite as savvy about this as you all are. So i ended up calling evolution performance to see if they could give me some quotes as they are only 20 min from me and everyone here seems to love them. I was considering a CAI which they said would be $75 to install, charge motion delete plates $160 to install, the steeda underdrive pulley $240 to install, and new 3:73 gears $525 to install . I am wondering if what they quoted me are fair prices and if not what you all think are fair prices for the mechanical work? Thanks for any input!

Hiya and welcome. Glad you joined us.
I'm a certified mechanic and the going rate is around $70-$75 an hour or any fraction of an hour. Everything is close but about the gears, that more than likely includes a full install kit with all new beaings and seals so that's why that's a tad high. And you can install the CAI yourself and save that $75.

+1 On the CAI install... It's not very hard to do at all. I would say order yourself the CAI and a tuner from EVO, and read the instructions. If you feel it's to hard to install, then take it to them to install it. Trust me, it's not hard to install at all. If you need help with it just post and we can walk you thru it. Best of luck.

In addition, there will be times where you will want to return the cars tune back to stock and back to the turn, so I suggest you learn how to do it.

+1 on the CAI install. You can do the Delete Plate install yourself as well. Just need a socket set and a screwdriver. Torque wrench would help, but isn't vital.

Those are ok prices; they sound like thy are about $70-75/hr which is way more reasonable than the local JBA shop here in SD. They will never see another dime of my money. I just got quoted $200 to get a set of race cans welded in. $200!!!! Insane. I went down the road to a muffler shop and got quoted $70. That's more like it. Midas tried to charge me $200 as well. What a ripoff. Gotta be weary of certain shops and their affiliates.

But yeah, those are good prices, but the $200+ you would save by doing the delete plates and CAI yourself would pay for the UDP install or the cost of the gears. There are threads in the tech section on how to install both of these if you care to try.

I paid $80.00 for Steeda UDP install. The same shop did my Steeda Ultralite springs with the alignment for $180. The CAI and tune I did myself its easy. I have been quoted $600 for the gears around town and that was with the gears included. If your price was just for the install, look around.

$525 for the gears w/ everything included is nice, but do the CAI yourself. I've done the Steeda w/ Predator and the JLT II w/ SCT II Evolution setup … I'm the King of F-up and I had no problems. Good luck anyway!

Pricing sounds reasonable to me. It depends more on the quality of work more than just the price.

Yeah, I was on the fence with them, but that put me over the top. They wouldn't even fab a h-pipe for me either; saying it was illegal & that it affected smog.

Prices don't sound bad, and I agree with the CAI as a do it your self project, I think it took me 20 min to do a CAI and throttle body spacer (total was of $ don't bother with it).

what CAI kit are you running? When I installed mine, I had to uninstall my TB spacer, because all the stuff wouldnt fit under the hood. The intake kit was hitting to many fluid holders. im running the C&L racer intake.

With gears you might want to do reputation first and price second. If gears are not done correctly they can be loud. Quite a few people here have gone thru this with gear installs.

Do the CMCV delete plates yourself too. That's a fairly straight forward mod.
