2005 Mustang GT... I think my rear gears are about shot
Well went to the track last wed and ran her on some used drag radials that i bought, with 99 cobra rims(great price). I've always hated nitto drag radials but anyways, no problem till today when i was going home. My rear was making a noise that increased as i drove and i could push the clutch in and definitley hear it. I use to hear really nothing except on the deacceleration i would hear a faint but normal gear whine. now it's like a whowing-moaning sound. starts slight when i start driving and when i'm driving normal its sort of loud. I have to take it in tomorrow to see what the hell is wrong with it. crap.

When this happens it's a sign that the gear oil has broken down and the temperature inside the differential has caused the face of the gear to wear. When this happens the gear will wear down more and more until it eventually fails.
I knew something was wrong with it and knew today to look for more gears. By the time i got home, it was louder than when i first left. Also when i left work, it felt like my car was either a little hesitant or low on power like my E brake was on. maybe it was in my head. i'll get it checked tomorrow.

I had the 3.90's installed about 2 months ago with RP gear oil. I changed the oil about 3 weeks ago. He told me to change it after breaking them in for 500 miles, so it was still fresh. i wonder if the track thing did something...hhhmmmm...crap
My installer keeps saying motive is crap and go back to FRPP gears. so i think i will very soon.

Sounds like your break-in was not good enough and the gear lube got too hot. The hard metal surface didn't harden enough under temp and pressure and now the softer metal underneath is probably exposed.
Is there a relative time limit on the gear oil life? It seems like changing the oil is relatively simple. How often should one look at it?
Is the oil change a do it yourself job? I need to change mine again. Does anyone know if you can add 2 tubes of friction mod when changing gear oil or should there be a wait before adding the second?
Ford says you only need one bottle. Yes you can do it, you just have to remove the rear cover to darin the rear. Just make sure the cover and rear surface is clean and dry of oil before you put the silicone on it and bolt it back on. The only time you need two is if your hearing it talking to you on slow tight turns.

Since we are talking about rear gears.. Is it smart to have my gears changed now? or on the same day(s) when my blowers being put on? Wouldnt it cost more for install if its just gears? Ive heard people paying 4-500 dollars for install?

That is something you have to ask the shop your getting the FI installed at. If your getting the gears installed at the same place then it might be less down time.

Yeah, the original shop i was planning on taking it to said they'd install blower kit and gears for 1000 dollars.. I can save myself 1000 dollars on the install but then im going to have to pay 500 for gears.. so i figure get the blower installed for an extra 500ish.. if u look at it that way?

It's pretty easy to change. You could add the two but one is good enough like mentioned. If you get royal purple, you don't have to worry about adding the friction modifier.

I know on the pre S197's it was like 60,000 or 80,000 miles was the recommend change, but now with the synthetic, i'm not sure. If you drive easy on it all the time, maybe 100,000. If you race and beat on it all the time, might want to change it sooner. And if you drive normal here and there, go to the track here and there, you change the fluid out when your rear gears or parts crap out like mine and stlwagon...damn.
3.73's will be installed next week.
