I purchased a "relatively new" 2006 Mustang GT with 1,998 miles on the odometer. This car is fantastic. I really missed the 300hp after driving Japanese for the last 25+ years (although my 255hp 2005 Nissan Altima SE is a pretty close 2nd...).
Enough of the commercial...
(Having not first consulting the owners manual snuggled securely in the glovebox...) I decided to try Chevron Supreme gasoline on the car's first fill-up, figuring that this would be a good thing...
MAN! How much top end noise can this car make? I understand that the intake manafold is bare to the world's ears since Ford decided to delete the manafold cover from the 2006 model, but I would have never thought in a minute that using 92 Octane gasoline would result in such noise. The car sounded like a diesel truck!
After reading the owners manual which states in no-uncertain-terms that 87 octane is the "REQUIRED" fuel, I topped off with 1/4 tank of REGULAR (87 octane) and within a few driving miles the unacceptable engine noise (what I would call VALVE clatter or SPARK knock, if these old terms still apply) subsided and the throughty growl of the Mustang reappeared.
Has anyone else experienced this and wish to comment, or does anyone have any mechanical advise or infomation to share?
P.S.
I posted some sounds. Originally recorded in WAV format by my mp3 player and then converted to MP3 on my webspace at URL
http://members.cox.net/ftp_server/MustangAudio for those of you who are interesed in this type of thing.
Be aware that I converted them from LOSSLESS *.WAV format to 192/bps MP3 and the "EXHAUST and INTERIOR" is "lacking" in it's representation. I plan to reconvert using a higher BPS for the MP3 when time permits.
