What are the advantages of an X pipe versus stock H pipe. I have read that the sound will change. I was speaking to a guy at a dealership who had installed the FRRP intake and FRRP X-pipe. He was saying if you add a CAI you should correspondingly open up the exhaust some by addiing the X pipe. Not sure that I buy that idea. Also, it looks to me like to FRRP X-pipe is a short piece; you cut out the H-portion of your stock exhaust and insert the X-pipe. Does an X-pipe flow that much better?

Yes an X flows much better but the sound does change. The FRPP (and a few others) do require cutting the stock H out and have the new piece welded in-place.
Here's what little I know about exhaust: an X pipe flows better which will give you a little more hp and torque but has a raspier sound while a H pipe cost less but sounds much better IMO.
I had a Bassani X with Magnaflows on my last Mustang, it sounded pretty good and I thought there was a noticable gain in power but it could have sound better.
I dunno about 1/2 second, but I have had both H and X pipes on 5.0 mustangs, and the X sounds raspier, and seems to flow better and balance the cylinder banks. the H pipe makes the car sound more like an older car, where the X makes it sound more modern, I guess.

I had a 5rwhp differance switching between an x and an h. If you do go x you probably won't like the sound of a chamberd muffler, switching to a "flow through" style sound much better with an X imho.

Good point... Flowmasters sounded terrible with the X.
ended up breaking the welds in my flow's with the X...LOL
Same here, thankfully when I called Flowmaster CS, they had received enough complaints that they did a silent recall for the ones made in early 06 and would send out new ones, free of charge. They learned the S197's, were just to tough on the welds, so they had to beef up the welding, so I was told.
I agree on the sound being undesireable (x-pipe and Flows) I had the Kooks headers and x-pipe done and kept my Flowmasters. Sound definately changed and I was not crazy about it, but didn't feel like spending $800 for the Corsa's either, so I lived with it........till I sold it and got something better.. yea baby!!!!
Thanks guys for your input. So it sounds like going with just the CAI is fine. To get a few more HP but at additional cost of X-pipe and mufflers.
