S197 Mustang GT... Time taken to build a forged shortblock?
Hypothetical situation guys,
Say my motor goes and I need to move on a replacement motor real quick. How long would it generally take a professional(like fox lake or Livernois) to build me a forged 4.6 shortblock?

MMR says 2 to 3 weeks. Don't know about they guys you mentioned.

Ya know, the more I look at it, and add up the costs(blower, built motor, suspension parts), that GT500 isn't such a bad deal. I take back anything bad i ever said about it's MSRP :-P

+1 on that man.. ive tossed the numbers around for a very long time.. I have come to realize its not as bad as it seems (GT500 prices)
Yeah however at this point, after plunking down 27k for the car initially and the rate of depreciation, it's probably no longer worth it to upgrade to the 500. I still blame Ford for staying silent about the GT500 right when I was on the market for a SVT vehicle. DAMN YOU *shaking my fist*!

To get my car running from a blown motor to tuned and ready to go took all most 3 months.
I also bought my block from MMR during December and Christmas time so it took them 4-5 weeks to get every thing done because of the amount of work.
Then after I blew my motor and finally got the block in it took 2 weeks to trouble shoot that my computer was dead after ordering and spending money on a BUNCH of other parts including a new throttle body, MAF, and some other things luckily I got to return those when it did not work. (my computer was throwing throttle body codes and going into limp mode)
Then there was making sure every thing was cleaned out and my supercharger did not have any particals in side from the mishap and other precautions and mods that I had to get done as well. waiting for parts to come in the mail. I also only let one guy work on my car and he was building a Turbo Camaro so I had to wait on that.
You could try and do what I plan on doing, which is to have everything shipped to me first, then have the shop put it all together. I'm going this way mostly because I will know everything will be here and in my possession before the build/install starts. No phantom missing pieces or shipping issues midway though work. I will trust that the MMR block that I plan on getting is ready to go when it gets here. I will be quite unhappy if anyone needs to "look at it" before the assembly takes place. I want to personally deliver all parts to the shop to ensure they get there. I'm personally estimating no longer than a week to install the heads/cams/accessories, swap engines and tune the car. Can't see how it can take much longer than that.
Its not the build that takes the time as long as they have you in the time slot. Its getting every thing working properly. Some times people get lucky and every thing goes together perfect and some times people get kicked in the balls theoretically for two months until it finally works.
Also from what I have learned is just to let your guys do there jobs and not to rush them. Because I am all about the fine details and ensuring every thing is perfect not having them rush to ensure its done by a deadline.
MMR was a week late on my block but I did not blame them because they were all parting a lot one of the weeks (NEW YEARS) so i expected that. Other then that they had all of the parts I needed and the only thing they did not have was the little MMR Stroker Badge and Block number but they shipped it to me but I never put it on so it was not a work stopping issue.
Some people dislike those guys but they make great blocks and I love how they use the 04 Block. It is the only block that I would put in my car other then the TEKSID block. I really do not like the stock 4.6 Alum Block.
I won't rush the shop either. I'm not a fan of deadlines, but I do want to reduce the down time as much as possible. Cost isn't a major issue, but I don't want unnecessary labor charges either. I'm not concerned with how long it will take to get the parts as opposed to how long it will take to get them in the car. I will be talking with the shop, and these boards, in the months leading up to the build to hopefully make sure everything can go as smoothly as possible on my end.
I like the availabilty and price of the MMR blocks. Aside from you, I think I have seen a few others using their blocks/products and no one has seemed to complain. They have good prices as well. Did you get your heads ported by them?
Yes I did there stage II port and polish with new stainless steel valves and springs.
Great motor
They use great internals and the 04 Block has more then proven it self as worthy.
Yeah thats the hard part about shops I guess I am lucky to have my buddy work on my car because I only paid like 1100 to install the Heads, Short Block, Clutch, Shifter, Gears, Oil Pan, New Computer, and Flywheel. Not to mention he ported my throttle body and polished my Valve Covers and Painted my Procharger Piping.
Cool. I just ordered a set of factory heads from ebay and I'm going to send them to MMR for the P/P. This will also reduce the downtime signifigantly.
That's a pretty good deal. I just found out last night that I would need a new flywheel. No big deal, but I'm glad I'm planning this thing out this far in advance. I'm hoping to stay in that price range since I'm not doing quite as much. Just the block, heads, cams, flywheel, accessories and tune.
Still thinking a week max for this. Hopefully nothing goes wrong, but it likely will.
Yeah but its going to take longer for tuning. Every thing can get hooked up in a week but not running that would be impressive if that happened. Look into a clutch as well the RBT700 is a great clutch from MMR.
I think I spent around 5300 on every thing out the door or was it 6300 i cant remember but I know I didnt have to pay tax or shipping because I paid in cash and picked up the parts my self so they hooked me up.
Really? I'd figure 1 day for heads and cams (while out of the car), 1 day to swap the engines and flywheels and a day, maybe two to tune it. I'm planning on the stroker SB, P/P heads (which will be done before they go to the shop) and Stage 3 cams. All the typical stuff as well, oil pump/pan, gaskets, etc. I got an auto, so no clutch for me.
Right now I'm priced at about 6K for parts, give or take a few hundred for things I haven't thought of yet. Maybe another 1500 for labor/tuning and that puts me in under 8K for the entire deal, which was my goal anyway. I'd be willing to drive up to MMR to get the engine if they were willing to extend me the same hookup as you. Taxes and shipping add up VERY fast.
