Default thinking of buying a 2007 V6 mustang.

hello new to this forum.
i was looking and driving a 07 4.0 v-6 mustang and was looking into tech issues with this car.
it is a hertz car sales car with the shaker 6 cd audio system.
nice car .drives nice now for the questions.....
belt or chain on the timing?
known issues on these cars?
easy cheap performance/efficient upgrades.
it will be my wifes car and i am looking more for reliable efficient solid{no calls when at work "the car died" crisis} LONG LASTING.
hows the auto trans on these?
speak to me oh great gurus and wannabee gurus of the pony puppies.
this is my womans midlife thing.
mine is motorcycles.
thanks in advance for any input.

They're solid cars. The auto tranny is strong, and there are tons of aftermarket parts you can put on your car to increase performance and appearance. CAI, tuner, exhaust, gears, etc, that are relatively cheap and most can be fairly easily installed. I put in my own intake and exhaust on my stang, and I had never worked on a car before in my life...

I also have a hertz car, and I have had no complaints with it thus far. They are well built cars...

Test drive it and do a check by mechanic, people do crazy things specially with Mustangs when renting them. The car itself is very very reliable, V6 has the same auto trans as the Mustang GT and they are one of the best transmissions ever made. New 05+ Mustangs are also very safe, i have seen many rollovers and everyone has survived without any injuries. Theres no issue at all with these new stangs, i had mine for around 4 months now and not a single problem, everyday i love it more and more. V6 has plenty of power for your wife, 210 hp and 240 Trq. You can change the stock muffler with a GT and get a really good sound out of it with additional 10 hp for around $30-$70 depends where you buy it, i bought a set on ebay for $60 shipped to me. If you want real power, spending from $499-$625 depends which brand you buy, can get you a Cold air intake and a tuner like SCT X3 or Diablosport predator that will reaaly wake up the car, additional 25-30 hp and plus you can have the car shift harder and do those fun stuff with the tuner. I hop that helps some of your questions. OK I will stop here and let someone with more knowledge jump in for the more technical stuff.

You can get an idea of some of the issues with these cars by looking through this thread.

Lol that was a bit harsh, those new v6's do alright for what they got. I have seen some cool setups on those things. Although id keep my v8 and only buy a v8 again after owning one- it may not be for everyone.

As for the OP's questions; typical problems with the v6 mustangs are the battery and alternator going out after 50k miles or so, water leaking in near the Smart Junction Box in the passenger side kick panel (which can lead to electrical issues), gas filling issues with the newer 'saddle-bags' style gas tank and a few guys have had problems with the Shaker 500 unit skipping and not wanting to play CD's.

Other than that, its a really solid vehicle. I'm at 70,000 miles on my manual 4.0 and it still pulls strong every time I hit the pedal. All of the issues I mentioned are pretty typical but fairly inexpensive and simple fixes.

And there's not as much support for aftermarket upgrades as the v8 models but there's still plenty. Keep in mind that any suspension parts (except springs), wheels, interior stuff, body kits, etc. are interchangeable between the GT and v6.

Think about it a little more. Is it wise to buy a rental car?

i bought mine used,46,000. it probably got harder use than a rental. thats just a chance you take buying used. ive had no problems. 52,000 now. truth is i`ll probably run it harder than any one else has. its a cool car and you can get a pretty good price from the rentals. theres a ford dealer down here selling a couple 07`s for 13,900. i gave 11,100 for my 05
