Default 2005 Mustang auto trans flush today

took the car into a dealer today and got the trans fluid replaced. i didnt want the guy messing with my hood pins so they let me hang in the stall with the mechanic during the process and open the hood myself. wish i could buy the machine to do this, way cool. first thing they did, with the motor running, checked the fluid level, and pumped some cleaner into it. took it for a ride and then back on the hoist. hooked the machine up to the fluid lines, with the motor running, uses the trans to actually pump out the old fluid, which you can watch through a clear sight tube, and another tube you see the new fluid going in. the old fluid came out black. did the complete change, hooked the hoses back up, and checked the fluid again( has to be checked with the motor running) total cost with tax and all, 157.12. the labor was 45.00 out of that. my car as far as i`m concerned was way over due. replacing the 12 qts of fluid was without a dought way better than just dropping the pan and changing 5 qts. i`m not one to have anyone do anything to my car, but this is one time i`m glad i let them do it. my car was a big hit in the garage, all sorts of people checking it out,its cleaned up and looking good today too, and even a old guy( well, even older than me) checking out the dual exaust to do to his car. it sounded kick butt in the garage, everyone in there was watching it, felt pretty cool.

I've never had much luck with flushing transmissions. It's always lead to problems shortly afterward.

ya, you mentioned that last yr when we were talking about trans oil. those words have haunted me ever since you said that. but, you gotta replace that oil, just as important as the motor oil, and you wouldnt want to do half a oil change. i fotgot to mention they hook the machine up to the car battery too, so its not just the trans pumping, the motor in the machine speeds up the process a little. i should have had this done when i first got the car, about 10,000 miles ago, but never had any shift issues.

What do you mean by this? Not trying to hijack the thread but I was planning on making a trip to the dealer to get mine flushed soon.

How many miles do you have on the car when u changed it? Can you honestly say that it made a difference? I have 31k on my car and was consideing doing that shortly.

Sometimes flushing a transmission can dislodge stuff. I had the tranny in my 99 GTP flushed and it failed a week later.

stl, it might have been a isolated case with your car. they do alot of explorers that have the same trans. i got my car with 44,000 on it, now it has 57,000, but i have no idea if it was ever done. i`m gonna do it again in another 15,000.

of course you are not going to notice a difference,( unless its low and you have a shift problem) just like changing your motor oil. would you drive 100,000 with out a oil change? its routine maintenance that gets overlooked. if you drive it hard, its gonna need more than the book requires for normal driving. its not easy to check the level in the sealed trans, and its a little messy. car has to be running, normal operating temp., you pull the bottom drain plug. if fluid doesnt gush out, its low on fluid, if it gushes out, you let it till it stops and add with a pump and special adapter through the same drain hole till it does come out, then its full. there is a tube inside the pan, kinda works like a toilet fill valve. when the level gets over the tube, it comes out the drain hole and its full. you dont want to overfill it either.

I would just drain the pan and replace the filter and refill.

Then I'd follow the maintenance schedule for severe use (30,000 miles).
